  1. Insurance on Best Laptop for Going Around the World? · · Score: 0

I just did five months in China and brought my Dell Latitude D620. It survived all my travels, the dust, and cold, the heat. One thing i made sure of, however, was before i left to have insurance. If i got it stolen, i'm screwed. My Latitude worked great (4.6 lbs), but regardless of what you do, get travelers insurance. I never had to use it, but that's the idea.

  2. Sonicwall on Web Censorship on the University Campus? · · Score: 0

The private college I've been at for three years uses SonicWall to block content. The only filter flag I've seen has been porn. Other than that, everything is fine. In all reality, I don't see not being able to access porn as hindering my academic education!

  3. My experience recently at a small uni on Podcasts of University Lectures? · · Score: 0

So I attend a private Christian university, Northwest University, in Washington State and recently one of my theology professors started this. The class normally meets MWF for an hour. However, he split the class into thirds and has us meeting once a week for discussion based off of the lectures we download, listen to, and sign a slip saying we listened to it and supplying at least one question from the three lectures we listened to.

This may be hard to do at a larger university, given that discussions would be difficult to do with a larger class base. However, this may give some idea. We just finished our first week of school, but so far it seems to work pretty well. It allows us to discuss instead of listen to lecture in class.

  4. One I haven't heard mentioned yet... on Managing a Huge Music Collection? · · Score: 0

is Musicmatch. I know, some of you are cringing now, but honestly, it has an interface that I really like, mainly, collapsable lists. I sort by artist, then below that I can choose to make albums into a list or just sort by album then track number. It does use a bit more memory than I'd like and is a bit more invasive than I'd like, however, I just can't get over the system. I double click on a song, it adds it to playlist. I can choose to make them add or automatically play. It have a nice burn feature as well as tag feature (SuperTag and Rename File). I've tried iTunes, MediaMonkey, Winamp, and random other things and just haven't found something I really like. Musicmatch, so far, is what I like!

  5. Re:As a Christian on March of the Penguins Tops Box Offices · · Score: 0

    Hats of to you, sir.

Another post made an excellent point: I don't hate homosexual people. I hate the act of homosexuality. I don't agree with what they do, but I've been some great homosexual people--and as long as they understand that I don't agree with what they do, that's great.

Sure, my beliefs oppose their actions, but I cannot change their actions. That's silly.

I heard a great thing on the radio today when one host disagreed with a great senator on some issues, but then went on to say that is fine because he disagrees with his wife and still loves her.

We can't always agree. Christians who are "intolerant" need to read a bit closer. Hate the sin, love the sinner...

  6. If you run out of games... on Game To Play During Lunch? · · Score: 0

Spike TV has Star Trek: TNG from 12 - 2 and MacGyver on at 3 (Alaska Standard time. Move an hour from normal listing). During lunch I get home about 10 after 12, make some food, watch 45 - 30 minutes of Star Trek.

I tried gaming during lunch but it's easier to eat while watching TV then it is trying to shoot Germans in Medal of Honor:AA.

  7. Friends fiance on What Dirty Tricks Did You Use for April Fool's? · · Score: 2, Funny

A good friend on my dorm floor recently got engaged over spring break. To get him back for how he asked her to marry him (he had a LE friend and had himself arrested), she called him in a panic saying she'd lost the ring (a few grand). She got his parents in on it and everything. He totally believed it, until about midday when she let it out.

  8. Grand Turismo 3 on Too Much Gaming, Anyone? · · Score: 0

After playing and watching a friend play Grand Turismo 3 for weeks on end, whenever I was driving I would take a corner and see those little lines that "Help" you during the license tests. "If I coast to here and accelerate... NOW."

And then I always want to swing to the outside of the road and coast in to the inside... but sometimes on coming cars don't appreciate that.

  9. *chuckes* on The Eye: Evolution versus Creationism · · Score: -1, Troll

This is a common conflict of Primary Assumptions. Evolution assumes if something has the same or similiar trait it demonstrates common ancestry. Creation and Intelligent Design assume if there is a similar trait it demonstrates common design to meet a common need. Both are philosophical positions, not scientific as you note.

The Bible and science are reconciliable. Research the creationist scientists out there. Many of them have debates with evolutionary buffs many times-- and win.

Honestly, for such a "learned group" here at /., I have to laugh. It takes MORE faith to believe in evolution, than creation. I find it much easier to believe in a Creator rather than chance. As Einstein, not a Christian but led to believe in a God by his own research, said, "God does not play dice with the universe."

And I laugh even harder at those who say God used evolution to make the universe. That's absurd. God, by definition, is all powerful. So WHY would he use something as stupid as evolution to do it?

  10. Relax on Sleeping Problems? · · Score: 0

Relax, relax, relax! Often times I find myself NOT able to sleep after a busy day or before a big trip. Why? I'm excited or nervous! I can't stop thinking about whatever past or upcoming event is going on. Surprise surprise, if your mind is active, it can't go to sleep!

Thus, try to relax before bed. My dad cooks. I like to read. Watching TV just doesn't do it (and as has been already stated, it can PREVENT sleep!). One /.er put it well: Read before bed. Sometimes I just read a strip comic book (Garfield, Foxtrot, Calvin and Hobbes). More often, I read whatever book I am reading. I have found though that the more "benign" the better. Read: Try not to read deep, philosophical books before bed. Reading a fiction book can help you relax, think about something else.

Key here is just to find what helps you relax. Amongst other things (Cutting caffeine, seeing a doctor, eating right, exercise) try to relax after a long day. Walk on the beach? Read? Listen to music? You decide!

  11. Freedom? I think not... on Would You Move to Space? · · Score: 0

It'd be nice to live free for once.

Ever played the Playstation 2 games, Red Faction (1 and 2)? The possibilities of asteroid mining... a corrupt group of people dominating the mining on an asteroid... far away from all of those committees and investigation agents. Total freedom for corruption-- and profit.

However, I think I'd still give it all to head to space... the until dream. I mean, come on, how many of us have read those books, watched those movies and dreamed of seeing that, being there, doing that...

    SpaceShipTWO here I come...

  12. Uhhh, this is old on Black Holes No More -- Introducing the Gravastar · · Score: 1

I read this article (I thought at same site) last year. Look at the date. April 2002. Sorry, guys, old news :S.

  13. Works for me on Downsides to Intrafamily IM? · · Score: 1

We have wired computers in near every room of the house, plus a wireless set up. When my brother, from out of town, came home for Christmas, there would be three of us sitting in the living room with our laptops. We wouldn't always IM, or at times do it as a joke. It's easy to IM link. We'll be talking, "Whoa, hey, check this link out!" Or, at one time, my mom and I were discussing what to get my dad for Christmas over IM. Why IM? He was sitting in the same room as us. I'd look at things I wanted to get him, send her the link. She approved, I eventually ordered it all right there, and he never knew the better? As well, I live in the attic. One post above mentioned how the guy lived in his basement and had an intercom. Well, that's me, but in the attic. And yes, I am a hermit. Often times my mom and I will talk on IM cause she doesn't like to come up here, and there is nothing for me to do down there. Normally though, I use it to talk to friends, people out of town, etc... I don't substitute it for normal conversation, but it is useful.

  14. Well... to start on Gaming Suggestions For A Non-Gamer? · · Score: 1

Action/Spy: Splinter Cell and/or Ghost Recon work well. As for soldier, Medal of Honor is good, Battlefield 1942 is excellent as well
Car: Uhh... Gran Turismo (PS2)? Grand Theft Auto is about as far as my racing goes.
RPG: Neverwinter Nights, hands down. That is by far the best (and using new rules) D&D game out right now. (For Playstation, any Final Fantasy game works very very well. Also, on same console, try Suikoden 1 and 2! AWESOME games)

Gaming system? I'd say PS2 just because of game diversity: You can play PS1 AND PS2 (plus DVDs) on it. XBOX only has limited, but some alright, titles currently.

    G'luck!
