  1. Re:Be Reasonable on Sunlight + Algae = Hydrogen fuel · · Score: 1

What about the storage problems associated with electricity, batteries are not the answer at this point anyway or else we would be using them at power plants. Hydrogen is containable, it could be burned to produce electricity on demand when it is needed.

Perhaps "best of both worlds" is a little overstated. However it does allow SNA to participate in a TCP/IP net effectively. Otherwise it would not be as widespread as it is. My point is that it solves a problem for many people and saves money, it allows for one infrastructure as opposed to an IP net and an SNA net. So I would place it in the good and cheap zone. As far as fast, it is fast enough or at least can make SNA think its fast enough.
Flamebait, maybe, religious, certainly looks like it ;-)

  3. Keep your bloody palm, I'll use my Newton. on Apple to release PalmOS device? · · Score: 1

Personally I find the newton 2100 to be an extremely usable hand held platform. I can read docs, except pdf--Ouch!, in any light, it has excellent battery usage. It can do things that can't be done nicely in the palm form factor, like act as a notebook. I would much rather see a device as large as a standard notebook as thin as a newt with the ability to read all sorts of documentation including html, email and even .docs. As well as include all the functionality of the newton platform, unlike the sharp platforms or the electronic books. A wireless, keyboardless workstation if you will. Wouldn't it be nice to write "ls -las" at a bash prompt while sitting in your ez chair with no cords at all.

Linux runs great on my Thinkpad 390. It even has a built in 3 button mouse that works flawlessly with X. The internal Stupid modem is a joke however. Its funny to watch clients in enterprise environments drool over the cool tools on my box. They don't know what's different they just know it is.

This is what I'm waiting to see. In order for linux to be a viable desktop solution, client apps such as Notes are needed. I'm still amazed that I am unable to find a reasonable fscking Mail app for my thinkpad running redhat. Just give me NeXTs Mail.app,(did you hear that Jobs!!) its a wonderful thing, probably the best mail client I've seen. It makes the current solutions look like childs toys.

  6. Re:Destroy SNA on IBM banks on Linux · · Score: 2

This is really out of IBM's hands, If they dropped SNA their current clients would revolt. In some Enterprise environments the legacy equipment, ie green screens, printers, which work perfectly fine for the application needed, will only use SNA. Anyone ever hear of a dumb term with an ip address? SNA is a logical, efficient protocol that coexists rather nicely with TCP/IP. DLSW is a prime example of the best of both worlds. SNA has made my brain sweat on more than one occasion but no more than any other protocol. In fact I think IPX takes the brain fart award and would much rather see it go away. At least SNA makes sense.

I wish I knew the specifics of costs. 20/20 seems full of BS most of the time. But as Everyone here knows data that is not backed up is in danger of being lost. Did theses hackers destroy the backup too? Sounds like whoever was breeched needs a security policy. Eric Burns..."ordered by a judge not to touch a computer for three years" I would go batty! A person with this punishment might have to resort to phreaking or maybe real terrorism.

As far as elegant goes, so what, it works well, is consistant and works more smoothly than anything out there. Illogical I must argue, controls are in the control panels folder ,Hmmm, one place on the machine to change settings, oh and how novel lets name them according to what they do.

Personally I would rather walk someone though changing IP settings on a mac than anything out there.

BTW feel free to change grep to any thing you want, but I am perfectly happy typing grep and will continue to do so even if the name gets changed.
