OK I see the point now but the arguement escapes me. I thank god that all my windows are not re-arranged when I change resolutions. Now if we could change resolutions and have the server remember where we put all our windows for EVERY resolution there may be an arguement here, but neither Macs nor winders handle resolution switching this gracefully. Winders drives me nuts when you switch resolutions and lose the ability to click on a button or move a window. That degrades my user experience. Personally I find the way X handles the resolution switching enhances my U.I. experience, certainly more than any other OS.

Your desktop and all applications aren't aware of any change (like they would be in MS Windows...

winders itself is not even aware of the change. Did you ever lose the ability to close the resolution control panel window after changing resolutions? That just ain't right!

This is what makes x cool, you run gnome I run wmaker and we can do it on the same machine running the same apps, at the same time if we get trickey and have the horse power.

Certainly seems to work for me considering the resolutions that you want to jump to need to be in the XF86Config-4 file. I dont need to restart the x server after a resolution change.

Winders peoples mouths drop open when I switch from 1200x1600 to 640x480 to check out a small image on a web page, with 3 key strokes, and then match the resolution close to the size of the pic.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein filps to the res its set for. other games do the same bzflag for instance.

    Am I missing something here?

I find X to be extremely flexible, yes there is some learning curve if you want/need to tweak it, but I see no real limitations.

This stuff, while it works, does not contain the variety of trace elements and organic composition that helps soil work better. Topsoil is by no means compost.
