Although anymore, it's not really a compromise... on newegg there's a lot of heatsink/fan combos in the $10 range that run at a nice quiet 2500rpm. I should know, I've got one.

Ignoring all the typical whiney /. comments about how that's impossible because of blah blah physical explanation (and totally missing the point of your question), I don't think mankind would have a chance as a whole. I would guess that within a week the surface would become uninhabitable.

I do however think a very very limited number of people could survive in deep mineshafts. Bring down a small nuclear generator, some source of oxygen, lights, canned foods and enough plants and seeds to be able to start some sort of food production, and I think a few people could survive for a number of years.

The main problems I see is that they have no way presumably of making the machinery necessary to keep things in good repair and to replace broken equipment. So without a lot of foresight, I dont' think those people would have more than a few years. Although it does make one wonder if some small secret govt. group has thought of and prepared for this contingency. Who really knows?

I also think the social chaos on the surface would kill off most everyone before a day or two are up.

Okay fine, Mr. Anonymous Coward think of it this way. The owner of the company has absolute control over the money. In other words, he can do whatever he damn well pleases. He could invest it in the company. He could keep it all for himself. He has no obligation whatsoever to give it to his employees. If you think he does, because they did the work of the company, you are nothing but a hypocrite. They agreed to work for the salary they have. Sorry but in this case the owner has absolute power... it was never the employee's money to begin with.

So what I am saying he could make a decision as owner of the company that 50% of the profits will go back to the community that allowed his business to thrive. Not to mention there is probably a tax benefit involved as well. I look at this as a case of a wealthy person trying to figure out what to do with his money. And my solution is give half away... the other half to the people that helped his business acheive its success by doing their jobs.

  7. consider donating part of the profits to charity on Christmas Bonuses? · · Score: 2, Interesting
Rather than dividing up all the profits between the employees, consider giving everyone a smaller bonus (say $750 or less) and collectively deciding on a charity to give the other half to. Since there's only 5 of you it shouldn't be hard to find one to agree on.

Considering that a poor American is much better off than like 3/4 of the world, that extra money would make a huge difference in other peoples lives who are much less fortunate. Not to mention there might be a tax benefit in there. I guess consider it an alternative to putting an extra grand in people's pockets who are already "rich" by any standard in the world.

So he tries to hook it up with the 3 A/V cables connecting to the A/V inputs on his VCR. Hmmm , oh well the picture's there but why is it fading in and out? Guess he has to go out and spend even more money getting a converter or a macrovision filter. Will he even know what to get? Why should anyone have to deal with issues like that in the first place?

$28 a month, 300 anytime, unlimited nights and weekends (starting at 8pm), free wireless web, pcs->pcs calling. I think it's an awesome deal for the amount I use the phone.

You know how I got those? I just called the customer service center and asked if they could do anything better for me. That's all. I didn't even have to play the "i've been thinking about switching to carrier xxxx" card, either.

I don't think you understand how much the companies WANT to have you as a customer. They don't have a monopoly, (unless you're in po dunk, nowhere) and they know it. I found with a lot of tests in college, the professor would give us either one or two nearly impossible questions. Some were OK at dividing them up into manageable portions but other professors didn't seem really try. Inevitably people would line up at their doors to ask questions which I thought was rediculous and I refused to do that as much as possible.

It would be far better to have a test with a variety of shorter questions in a variety of difficulty levels (ie.. easy, medium, hard). Sometimes people just need a warm-up problem or two to gear up for the more difficult stuff. Throwing an impossible question at someone doesn't test them on what they know... it just tells you they either can or can't do that impossible question. The ones that can't will resort to anything like cheating... and then justify it to themselves because the test was too hard. Make the test so even the people that don't recall as much can still score some points for what they do know... they may still get a C or a D but they'll at least have the chance to show they learned something with an opportunity for improvement in the future. (it's hard to improve one's average with a sub 50% score on a major exam). People are industrious when it comes to solving problems in any situation... if they "need" to succeed, they will do it somehow. Make it worth their time not to cheat.
