    metric system is all "interlaced" like this: 10 cm 3 = 1 litre or in other ways 1 m3 = 1000 litres 1 litre of water = 1 kilogram 1000 kilograms = 1000 litres of water = 1 m3 water = 1 (metric) ton. needless to say (maybe) 1 km = 1000 metres = 100,000 cm and so on

    Fully agree except that (1) for now sw patents are still not allowed (nor valid) in the EU and (2) If someone from China wants to market in the US something that is patented there I doubt they can just do away with patents in the target market.

    Specificaly the ruling says:

    "To the extent that any of this interface information might be protected by intellectual property in the European Economic Area, Microsoft would be entitled to reasonable remuneration. The disclosure order concerns the interface documentation only, and not the Windows source code, as this is not necessary to achieve the development of interoperable products."

    3. Microsoft can now lock out all open-source projects trying to attain API compatibility. Good-bye WINE, Samba, et al. Imho you should be carefull with conclusions like this. All the EC rulling is that if and when there is IP to protect they are entitled to reasonable remuneration. Note that sw patents are not alowed in the EU, so this protection is much smaller that in the US.

    Just 2 notes -- IMHO - -- If corporate greedy guys like M$ had their way the www would not exist (closed source incompatible BBS would be the norm). This is the market held by AOL that M$ tried to enter in 1995. If HTML was not given to the public domain (its not GPL, was pure give way afaik) -- To say OS is un-American is simply stupid and ignore reality. To say it is against certain concept of domination and more of some US corporations and politicians, it is probably true.

    two issues imho 1. Windows 3.0 did not have media player as far as I remember. They made big fuss in 3.1 when some basic sound tools were introduced as "multimedia" 2. M$ is a monopoly (repeat monopoly). That is why certain retriction apply (and more should) that do not exist if the market is competitive.

    I was never infected by a virus.
    Howver, sometime ago someone who kept my (professional) email address must have been infected
    and now I am receiving all sorts of stupid spamm,
    including unsolicited offers, plain bullshitt and erotic things. Its a real noisance I I depend a lot
    on email for my work.
    Overall these bastards are taking way a big part of the benefits of this fantastic technology (email).

    The only thing I do (from time to time)is to inform the postmaster@domain they use as repply to.

    Any other clue of what can be done otherwise?

    as far as I know Linux is metioned nowhere in the proceedings. This is not Linux vs Microsoft It is EU vs Microsoft, based on (very) specific claims.

    The issue is not to make "anti-MS zealots happy". It is to protect our future. For all of us. The argument is narrow, but again Al-Capone was arrested for tax evasion on the first place. Somebody must start somewhere, and the US Government clearly didn't.

    Maybe their are specificities in their behavour (say -- they really used SCO copyrighted code in some way) that will enable SCO to spread a new wave of false claims based on partial info and FUD.
