... Open is good, closed is bad. So when proprietary companies open something up, we praise them for moving in the right direction. When OSS companies close something up we criticise them for moving in the wrong direction.
So Linus doesn't care about a company spreading FUD about systems based on his kernel so they can essentially elicit protection money?
If so, then I am disappointed in him.
Surely though, Blizzard winning damages from this company means that Blizzard has directly gained money from the selling of in-game "Gold" which is against their own EULA.
Ironic eh?
SHOW US THE CODE OR STFU.... and this ladies and gentlemen is why this will not come to court because M$ never want to talk about their code or clarify their claims. This is merely saber rattling for their current racket of frightening more spineless corporations into signing patent covenants.
I'm looking forwards to the day when someone in the FOSS community takes M$ to court for deformation, and wins, and subsequently all these corps that signed patent covenants come knocking on their door with lawyers demanding their money back.
Nope, I refer you to the text base browser called "Lynx". This is a unix program and had tabbed navigating. So once again Microsoft claims a patent on something that it didn't invent.
Your credit card and social security numbers are only for your personal use, they have nothing to do with controlling public behaviour, which exactly what HD DVD encryption keys are for.
So you can't compare disclosing someone's personal information to disclosing an encryption key for selling digital media.
VMWare is hardly a competitor, and if they're referring to using competing OS's on VMware, well they're shooting themselves in the the foot because someone might just as well likely run a MS OS in a virtual machine for development proposes.
If it were that unsecure, why would it have zealots in the first place? Why would anyone stick with it?
What about all those secure apache servers out there?
I have to say, I'd had in the back of my mind, that Vista may be an inevitable change in a few years when I got my next computer.
However, this press release has really hit home with me, just how justified that borg picture of Bill Gates really is.
In short, thier press release, reminding us all that Vista will be infected with DRM "functionality" is just another reason that I should stop procrastinating and start learning to use Linux, because by the time I get my next computer, I'm sure as hell going to want (nay need) to use it rather than Vista, and Vista sure as hell won't be touching this computer.
The thing is, you kind of counter-argued yourself.
It is correct that most people don't know and don't care about HTML/CSS/DOM stuff, and THAT IS PRECISELY WHY MYSPACE ARE AT FAULT.
Myspace made it so that that *had to* handle with HTML/CSS code, even if you didn't know what it all meant.
Had they made a smarter customisation interface, we wouldn't have all the horrible browswer crashing profiles that Myspace has precisely because a lot of users don't know what they're doing.
I have never understood why you would buy from iTunes in the first place.
Your music is infected with DRM that locks you into only using your music with an iPod.
To me, that is (and should be for everyone else) a deal breaker at square one. So if sales are indeed plumeting, I hope that it is because people are getting wise to the unreasonable limitations DRM puts on your purchase.
DRM - Making it harder for legitimate users while doing nothing to stop illigitimate users.
"According to The Hollywood Reporter, the RIAA maintains that in the modern period when piracy began devastating the record industry profits to publishers from sales of ringtones and other 'innovative services' grew dramatically. Record industry executives believe this to be cause to advocate reducing the royalties paid to the artists who wrote the original music."
Let me get this straight - record industry profits were devasted when profits from 'innovative services' dramatically grew ?
I dislike Sony as a company, so that would be enough to put me off Blu-Ray.
Personally though, I don't want to buy physical films anymore. I know fans/enthusiasts love all the little extra booklets and extra cases, but to me it's just clutter. Why have a shelf full of just a dozen films, then you can have an external hard drive on your desk with ten times that many films?
Before too long, home entertainment hardware and home computing are going to be much more integrated. You can already buy DVR's with ethernet ports or USB ports.
I think if HD-DVD or Blu-Ray come in useful in anyway function, it will be as high-capacity re-writable DVD's on your computer - say as a large removable back-up drive. At least in this mode of operation you don't have to concern yourself with idiotic DRM and Region systems.
As the EFF predicted, DRM is going to eventually kill off sales of digital media. Both formats are big on DRM, but all DRM does is make it harder for people doing things legitimately and will never stop "illegal" acivies from carrying on.
Hmm,
I'm just wondering, how many people would have known the ariel photo showed Miss Streisand's home if she had not raised this issue in the first place?
Some people are so desperate for publicity.

Yet more scaremongering from Ballmer's boys.

You're an idiot aren't you. You obviously don't understand the GPL by any rate.

I have thought the same. In fact, I've found it so blurry it's made me go cross-eyed, so I switch it off too.
I suggest you read the Ubuntu forums, I haven't seen much of the "RTFM you stupid noob!!!!" behaviour there yet.
... I'd have voted for Doug Stanhope
Because it makes you look even worse when they start making you look bad on another site for censoring them.

I appreciate that thinking, so if they choose Novell SuSE LInux I think they'd alienate almost all Linux users.

Talk about contradicting yourself.

I have used ScheduleWorld for a little while, but I was under the impression the iCalendar access was read only. Am I correct on this?
