    Yeah so true, I once coded a small but complicate piece of code after a hefty evening (forgot about a deadline... long story) - worked perfect for about half a year, but then it needed to be extended and it was just easier for me to rewrite the whole thing - thoug the 'drunk' solution was quite clever, because it was a tad faster than the current one...

    you mistook a smart for a microcar.
    microcars are in essence moped's with rain protection and are only allowed to go 45 km/h.

    Why the hell is everyone assuming desktop == average user - not everyone who needs a desktop has no clue about how computers work...
    i use my current slack install as a desktop for ~2 years now (no reinstall, simple upgrading - currently sports kernel 2.6.7 + kde 3.3) and it's the snappiest desktop linux i ever experienced (in my opinion faster than gentoo, suse, fedora ...)

    Long time ago I bought a 20Gig Maxtor. Died within 6 Month. Waited around 3 month for replacement. Died within 2 weeks. Got another replacement disk (only 1 month this time). This one was already slightly damaged (paused for ~20 seconds from time to time, 'click'...). So no more Maxtor for me.
