Well, had you read up on the information available from sources other than Slashdot, you might have been clued in about this from the start. Things are not always as they seem here at Slashdot. It's pretty typical around here to read the first sentence and embellish it into something it's not quite. For example, Tarbox has said that this lawyer who the other Katie implies threatened her, does not represent her. But you know how the sheep here feel about lawyers, one mention and keyboards all over the world get covered with spit.
Beyond academic exercise, what is the purpose of such a vehicle? Military, and they already have one of these. To me, this is like the nut in New Zealand who builds cruise missiles for fun and games. Sure there are lots of "wild" ideas, but in reality, most of these problems have been solved by existing technology (which in fact this is).
This is the future of education. The classic residential campus approach is just too luxurious for the United States in its declining period.
On second thought, have you SEEN the tuition? 28 to 30k a year . For that kind of $$, I want more than a Microsoft Cert or two rubber stamped on my head.
You won't find someone who's just there for the paycheck going into a trance and cranking out 1500 lines of code in 8 hours, forgetting even to eat, like those of us who REALLY LOVE this stuff do from time to time.
I've always hated to hear people spew out this line as some indication of obscenely hi skill or dedication. Personally, I would not work for someone that required this. Eating is an essential function and is necessary for the health and wellbeing of the human body, as well as being good for keeping the mind functioning correctly. Sorry, but anyone who says that good, solid code comes out of marathon coding and nutritional fasting will probably do just fine at Northface / Devry / ITT Tech.
So... the first course teaches all of "software development life cycle, OO Concepts, introductory Object Role Modeling (ORM), Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERD), HTML, ASP.NET, ADO.NET, Visual Studio Enterprise Architect, C#, Structured Query Language (SQL), Microsoft SQL Server, and XML basics.". That is quite the... course.
This is the future of education. The classic residential campus approach is just too luxurious for the United States in its declining period. A liberal education is today a luxury good. And if you have to pay for it with twenty years of loans, it probably wasn't worth it.
I agree, this is the way things are going, and yes it's because people just can't afford a traditional 4 to 6 year education. And this is too bad, because as many have pointed out here, traditional universities teach more than job skills.
The Daimler-Chrysler case had nothing to do with the issues at steak in the IBM case, a point that seems to be lost on many people. The Daimler-Chrysler case was not an IP case, it was a contract case in which SCO said Daimler-Chrysler had to prove they where not using SCOunix, and they had to do it a certain way and in a certain time-frame. Daimler-Chrysler disagreed, and won.
In a way, the Daimler-Chrysler case had nothing at all to do with Linux or even SCOunix.
"Indeed, SCO says the company's biggest investor, BayStar Capital, has been pushing SCO to drop its Unix business altogether and simply become a litigation machine, bringing intellectual property-related lawsuits. But SCO insists it remains committed to selling Unix software--when it's not busy fighting people in court."
The same Baystar that claims that SCO must return its investment as SCO has been misleading them?
Indeed. And while Darl and Company publically pawn off the "litigation machine" issue on BayStar, I'll bet BayStar is fine with that, as they are getting exactly what they want with this latest volly of SCO FUD, note that SCOX is on the rise...
Or what Microsoft tried to do 10 years ago but realized they where a "software company" and got out of... Remember MSN? The next AOL? DIdn't fly then will not fly now. Build a decent OS and they will come. Sprinkle little flashy things all over it, and they will barf.
It's always interesting (but not really) the way that people try to justify ripping copies of music / DVDs / software, all these "fair use" arguments, as if even half of these people ever actually bought the original item. You would think everyone was just trying to archive their stuff or something (and NONE of these people have EVER downloaded and serials or anything). Stop trying to get something for free, and admit to what it is you really want: Free stuff. Be honest with yourself, your karma will love you.
[Joke]The REAL reason they went out of business is that everyone was burning and distributing illegal copies of their software.[/joke]
So, it's more or less an open secret that they made software for pirating software / movies / other stuff, but this is "OK" because it's not your software / movies / other stuff?
That's because they are all loaded down with spam transmision.
I think so. It's all about money. Money makes lawyers do things...
"Stuff that matters..."

Well then, I guess no moolah for katie.com! She can go back to building an obscure blog. Problem solved! In other news, there was never a story here!
It might be hard to /. since it's hosted at Earthlink, not on some DSL hookup...

Sounds like a Microsoft Cert program to me...

Ever-popular? Which other book authors have done this? I must not keep up too well.
Damn. I knew it was too easy!
9999? Someplace in that reigon? Just a wild guess.
In a way, the Daimler-Chrysler case had nothing at all to do with Linux or even SCOunix.
Sure, of course SCO got emails. But do they say what SCO says they say? How do we know this? SCO says a lot of things
2) SCO only licenses IBM to distribute AIX code on Intel platforms, not PPC platforms, and that is the crux of this announcement.
Do we know this? SCO says so, but they say a lot of things
4) The fact this is AIX not Linux is interesting. Essentially, this has nothing to do with SCO patent claims against Linux.
This has never been about Linux, had it been, SCO would have nickled and dimed at smaller more edible Linux companies, not IBM.
The same Baystar that claims that SCO must return its investment as SCO has been misleading them?

How about Red Hat, Novell, SCO (!), Richard Stallman (FSF)... Of course, BSD is dying, no point in bothering with those folks...
In FACT it says: The lawyer "tried to convince me that I should donate the domain name to them,"
That's a little different.
I'm an American. It is my duty.
How is this much different than Slashdot's reg / pay for advanced stories and no ads? Anon Coward is really just intimidation the register.

See, that's the problem: this is NOT so. You buy something based on the terms of the seller. You agree to the terms when you buy it.
