It's just Slashdot, one site out of a million on the internet. Who care's. Go outside, look at the orange ball in the sky, or just do - Anything! If you get this worked up about Slashdot, you are indeed VERY VERY sad.
One idea would be to buy a thermal monitor for your motherboard, like the after market ones used to stick between your heat sink and cpu. With this, you could plug it into your motherboard, have it go outside of your case, and to the outside air. As far as logging the temperature, you could use Motherboard Monitor 5 for instance, which is free. It can compile all of the statistics, including the temperature you want to record, into a HTML file. Then, just make sure it compiles the folders in a directory you can see, and viola, you'll be able to see your house temperature no matter where you are.
I want to see something fly into that beam so bad. Come on, what's more interesting, collecting information about the atmosphere, or watching a huge green lazer vaporize a passenger jet? Muhahaha.
I recently had an AMD 1400 Mhz chip that was used for my schools Journalism department. It has been dropped easily a few dozen times, left behind a VERY dirty, dusty desk for about a month, AND has been submerged in photo developing chemicals. Out of sheer curiosity, I put it on one of the boards the other day, and in amazement it still worked.
Some guys have done it before with a camry and video taped the entire deal. You can get it off of my site at http://mrgravy.com/uploads/remote_camry.wmv (download it if it doesn't stream fast enough). I originally got it from StileProject (don't ever go there kids), and who know's where it came from before then. Defintely worth a watch.
That is a good point. I think the processors they are talking about are the latest ones for breakneck speed. Of course they're going to be hot. After they have been developed are they made more economical.

Finally, the US government has made a recruitting tool for all of the Linux gurus too! :)

I want one. Now. My damn processor stays a nice 130+ degrees. Yay.
