A system running with no networks services is not open. In fact if you get nmap and scan the system you will notice that all ports are closed.
A firewall(gateway/router) is used to route connections between subnets and to restrict network services to certain subnets. This is quite useful when one doesn't have control of all the systems on the subnet.(these systems could run vunerable services, making the network insecure)
But seeing as though a personal computer is not a network(the exception might be that it is a honeynet) you can just disable the network services and save yourself a lot of trouble.
Inner firewall AKA. user accounts.
Personal firewalls are useless.
*The default action taken by the tcp/ip stack when a packet arrives on a port that doesn't have a service running on it is to drop the packet.
*They waste resources and (because they are a service running with admin privilages) create a possible security hole.
Come on people, think.
The problem with these great ideas is that six different companies will implement it.
Each implementation will be incompatible.
and we'll end up with a great big mess.
why is it still so difficult to get information off the web? What happened to all these promised 'web services'?
Companies that host information on the web have a wish to make money from this content. Mostly this money comes from advertising.
Web services won't allow this advertising to be delivered as effectivly.
fast startup ey? The problem with software is that people always want to much from it. This always comes at the cost of speed. If you only used text based apps then you'd have your fast startup.

Agreed.
Maybe some better graphics...as long as it doesn't take away from the storyline.

People steal thousands of music albums, tv shows, movies. I just can't imagine any of these people actually paying for all that media.
If people were unable to pirate any media, I don't think sales would go up much at all.
I did not say that it was any less serious.
But I was commenting on the increase in computer crime sentances.
Currently in Australia, the modifying or deletion of data on a computer system that you are not authorised to access can get you 10years.
I think that's a bit much, seeing as if I broke in to someone's house stole every piece of paper in it and beat up the family.
I wouldn't get a sentance anywhere near 10 years.
Freedom is not about sacrifice. If you have to sacrifice then you're not free. In the same way that you don't want to be locked in to non-free software, you also don't want to be locked in to free software.
We are bound by the same constraints!
Physical security of your computer systems is just as important as software security.
All passwords and encrption keys are stored somewhere.
If I had physical access to your computer (and harddrives weren't encrypted) it's quite easy to get full control of your system.
ummm....The FBI doesn't kick in doors of legitimate businesses.
I'm all for free change of ideas and works...as long as the people creating those ideas and works are alright with it.
Sites like http://www.downhillbattle.org/ and http://www.craigslist.org/ have the right idea.
Sites like http://www.suprnova.org/(rest it's soul) do not.
Sysadmins should have already fixed this problem.
SP2 was available months ago.
If you aren't patching your systems when the patches are out then you deserve everything you get.
iptables is used for routing mostly.

*shouldn't still be around. ah, I see the issue.
How come these things still happen? Lazy programmers? Crappy x86 archtecture? These self-created problems should still be around.

free software != open source
Free software is a GNU thing.
That's why laptops have a video port, a mouse port and external keyboard port. Just get a laptop and use it as a desktop.

We call the solution PXE booting. Never trust users to do anything.
yay! I like radio
I suppose it ran as slow and resource intensive as it did on windows?
Links2 is fast and in framebuffer mode is great for porn.
It even has tabs...although without a tab bar.
links2 for life!

Someone who isn't being fooled by intel's crazy marketing.
I just wonder...if the kid had stolen the test after it was printed out would he still be facing 6 months in jail?
Apparently it's an orgy distro. :D

The point of this is that microsoft will be seen as looking out for the security of it's users.
Users think
firewalls + anti virus software +
anti spyware software
= security
Amazing that all of these are backups for failed security.
have you heard about service pack 2?
