Right, which is why I keep reading articles about soldiers raping and murdering civilians in foreign bases all over the world?

I think you must never have served in the military as I have. You would know if you had that your statements are just optimistic wishful thinking of a world that isn't. In this world, militaries from ALL nations have been shown throught recorded history to be capable of the most brutal and disgusting behavior imaginable. And you want to give them a pill that makes it easier? Sheesh...
Sci-Fi is about breaking the constraints and tired plots of conventional stories. This means fantastic things like aliens, robots, artificial intelligence and time travel. Not rehashing the stale concept that the rest of the universe really isn't so different from home and we'll never really evolve past the emotions and biases we've got right now.
Well, I think one of the great Sci-Fi writers, Orson Scott Card (if you haven't read Ender's Game, just go away now) said in an interview that Serenety (and by extension Fierfly) is one of the best SciFi movies he's ever seen, precisely because of the story and not all the froo froo.
Maybe what they "got" was that jamming in front of a great crowd was better AND made them a lot of money.
Of course if you look at how Phish is making money by selling soundboard quality recordings of their live shows, I think it's a good bet that they "get" it too.
Anyone know of a cheap offshore hosting site, one where I could anonymously upload my 10G of mp3s and offer them to everyone for free? We could start a collective where people could anonymously donate for the cost of the hosting...
Maybe what we need to do is get pro-active in bringing about their destruction. And for those who want to argue that it is only going to hurt the artists, I would say what will really happen is we will be forcing those artists to look at what they are doing in signing with record lables under the RIAA. If that is what they choose to do, then they have to be responsible for their choices - as do we all, but that is another rant all together...
Actually, if history is any indicaton, what we will likely see is another shift in what technology is used to share, such as we saw with konspire2b and freenet with end users creating more and more ways to escape the prying eyes of the **AA's while enjoying the freedoms they now enjoy.
