Their is a couple explanations there, but none of them gives a good reason.
Thet are
Tradition
Tradition as never been a real reason to continue something ; only what inspired the tradition could.
For the by-products of the quest
Comparing prim computation with space odessy is a little bit exagerated. The FFT trick, for example, as also been found in other area.
People collect rare and beautiful items
Laughable. You cannot try to establish a comparison with fundamental scientific quest and put it side by side with this "argument". And I did't know that inifinit abstractions are rare.
For the glory
Glory as to come from acheivement, and this what am I looking for here.
To test the hardware
Like it was the only or the best hardware test. Sure you can compare (in a limited view) computer speed with a prim computation test. But, do we need bigger prims number? I think not.
To learn more about their distribution
Unless you can't compute every numbers, you don't bring anything worth to mathematics because their is enough data now. What we miss is a theory.
For the Challenge
Let say it is similar to "for glory". Everything can be done "for the challenge".
For the Money
Ah! There we are : money. But the question I raised was to find a purpose to this "quest" and to find out why somebody would give money to such thing. So this would be a circular reasoning.
So to resume this, could I say it is a tradition taken from dead people they transformed into a "challenge" for glory justified by money and addressed to "people who likes to collect rare (infinite) things" and supposedly meant to help without knowing how except for the by-products of the quest?
I wont go into point by point response. You bring valid concerns, but none that cannot be solved.
Let me just say that those who don't think semantic web can really happen are those who would have said the same thing about the web in it's very first steps.
I know I will be flamed, but let's take a bet. I'm sure we will see a full semantic web worldwide implementation before we see any AI mainstream succes. Never mind, one day, when semWeb will meet AI, things are going to change forever!
Privacy is always concerned want it comes to remote access/contol. Maybe now, they play fair, but you can't predict the future. When the system is installed, how can you get rid of it? If you cancel your onstar, I'm guessing they just stop 'following' you!? Can you be sure there is no way for them to grab a single byte of data? Do you really know what they sensor and what they do with this data? Couldn't they track every car and sell this information?
Could they refuse to serve people who changed a piece of car with one from another company? Imagine a legislation that prohibits you from using the muffler you are using. (that's an example...) Should they denounce you if you don't follow the rule? It brings a lot of concerns.
I'm waiting since a long time for reiser4... When it was marked "safe to test" I was ready to install but heard a couple of complains. Could someone tell me if resizing is now supported? I'm on LVM2 and don't want to lose the ability to resize on the fly like I have with my reiserfs3 partitions.
Also, I was told xattr(ibutes) weren't supported. That's not so bad, but I wanted to be sure since beagle and other begin to adopt this.
Slashdot... News for nerds : nred is soon to be replaced by consumer. Stuff that matters : I can't see why this "news" matters to anyone? This is an opinion more than a review, on a product with nothing special or interesting. And if you by a cell phone for it's music software, you got a serious problem my friend!
I mean come on./... their enough bad review sites don't promote those or try to do the same. An what's the hype for this particular product? Apple brand makes you wet?
I can't remember when I last pushed the Back button. In fact I use it but not much since I discovered tab browsing. Take slashdot for example, if there is three new links that I want to read, I open then in three tabs (middle click with background loading) and I continue to browse for more on the main page. So I get better 'spatial organisation' and no wait for these page to load. Thanks to some other extensions I get a couple extra features.

Sorry, I'm sceptical today...
Makes me wonder what's the point to find such prime numbers? Right now, it looks like "mine is bigger than yours" : pointless.
This should serve has a reminder make backup; mirror data!
Ignore Vista until 2008 or eternity, whatever is farther.
Let us stop companies playing physicists.
sorry...
There is no .com worth the battle. I leave in a (imaginary?) world : free world. Only .org there.
lol ;)
I like that one!

That do want it or not, the semantic web is coming!
Did you mean JavaScript#?
Now I know what I want for Christmas : a super repacker!

Sorry, I don't like to be watched...
What should we think of this page (URL)? http://www.sun.com/emrkt/rejected/approved.html
I'm sure they never read this. That is not really good naming. Anyway...
Security is important, but privacy is precious.

Thanks and viva reiser4!

Oh boy... that's sad, but hey, that's my 2 cents.
Why can't you link directly to the link? Is it too much to ask from slashdot to not use google?
Now I can't live without...
Their is nothing more (useful) to say than what parent said.
Makes me think of Azimov short stories.
I like the conclusion.
You surely underestimated fuel costs. Have you seen gaz price!??!
I share your concern and everybody should. That's why IBM came up with this.
