I think that we have to note who these games are being targeted at.
Let's face it most gamer's are male. Most of them are teenaged. Most of them wouldn't have anything to do with an unattractive female in a video game.
The problem now is that girls do not want to play these game because of the way women are depicted, and women will not be depicted in a way suiting to the people who share the views of the author until girls become a sizable part of the market for computer games.
And there is no right answer to this problem.
