  1. Why not... on CD-R In A Digital Camera: The Ueber-Mavica? · · Score: 1

...just put a 2.5" laptop Hard Drive in a camera, and give us FAST UBS, Firewire, etc. and the ability to link to other cameras and share pictures? With a Hard Drive, an LCD screen, USB, etc, there is a lot we could do with a product like that. Hell, we could probably find a way to hack the ROM and install Linux on it! :)

  2. Re:Free the Copper! on Thoughts On Third-Party DSL Providers? · · Score: 1

Mean time to respond for us (we have hundreds of circuits) is about 1 hour, mean time to repair is about 2 hours.

Yeah, I have to say, US West's response time in regard to their T1 customers is INCREDIBLE. I know one of the techs that does the indoor work (filing paperwork for incoming tickets, assigning lower-level techs to fix on-site problems, doing "line tests" to determine exactly where an issue is, etc) and he does a fantastic job. He once picked up the trouble ticket for my business (he didn't know that was where I worked), and called me in less than 20 minutes (I'm the IT Support Guy) to let me know it was ok.

As long as you can deal with them direct, or through another large organization, the TelCo's aren't TOO bad - but if you have to deal with them through some DSL provider with a "$19 twig", you're pretty well screwed.

  3. Re:Logo on Best Way to Get Kids Started in Programming? · · Score: 1

Logo(writer?) was a great start for programming - we did it in the 5th grade. Did anyone else's have the attachment that you could place on the floor with a marker, and a big piece of paper, and the commands you put into the program make it draw what you have on screen on the paper?

    Way cool.

  4. It's not all that bad... on AOLization of America · · Score: 1

I hate to back AOL even a little bit - but I have to say that I for one am glad that AOL was my first "Internet" experience. I BBS'd and all that - but where I lived at the time all I could get for INTERNET was AOL. It was also the only way that I could convince my over-protective parents to LET us have internet access. My parents used it for chat rooms, getting recipies, etc - I used it to download stuff and chat on IRC. I have moved on to far better things since then, and although MANY of the people who use AOL get stuck in that rut - many others like myself and my brothers used AOL as nothing but a stepping stone. Although I still hate having to explain to some of the gomers I run into at my part time job (Big National Computer Store Chain That Also Sells Excercise Equipment) that AOL is not THE INTERNET!!!

  5. If they find a good use... on US PlayStation 2 To Have A Modem & Hard Drive? · · Score: 1

It's a neat concept and all, but what would someone honestly do with the modem / hard drive?

The main reason that I download stuff for my PC games is that a lot of the PC game companies release games before they are totally done, and have to update Video Card drivers, etc.

The only POSSIBLE thing that I would want to use it for would be for updates to games that I own (ie Updating the Belts and Character Profiles on WWF Smackdown to match the show!!)

But of that was a priority for the companies that make these games we would already have that kind of functionality for the PC, which we sadly don't.

    Just my $.02

  7. X-Windows on the X-Box? on Microsoft Unveils Gaming Console · · Score: 1

Well, from these very preliminary specs, it sounds like it MIGHT run Linux! It will probably have VERY proprietary Ethernet, Video, etc - but at around $300-$400, which is the MOST they could charge for it if they want to compete, it could end up being a good, Microsoft-provided Linux box!

  8. Digital Cable on Digital Television Transmission Standards · · Score: 1

Where I live in Minnesota, our cable company where my Parents live now has changed to new cable boxes, and in all of the info screens in the cable box it says that this is Charter Communications' new "digital cable". Is this a form of HDTV? The change was so current and sudden, and I was shocked by the "digital cable" tagline.

    Any information?

I disagree. Most of the geek girls I know are pretty emotional / loving.

The ideal woman is one who selflessly meets your every needs.

    Agreed.

The proper role for the woman is that of handservant, who considers running your bathwater to be part of a "mutually beneficial" relationship.

    Agreed.

One way to evaluate a woman is to take off her clothes and makeup.

One way, but not necessarily the best way.

In bars, the females that are unattainable are called "women" while the ones that you are supposed to go after are called "girls".

    Disagreed.

If a woman finds you unattractive, dump her as quickly as possible.

If she has a problem with it, yes. If she's ok with it, no.

Grown breasts are worth waiting for.

Only if you think she has great potential.

Be nice to geeky looking girls, just in case they grow up and look good.

I would say be nice to any girls that aren't bitches, regardless of physical appearance.

In spite of all of the above, imperfections are to be overlooked.

    Most, but not all.

All women are looking for a man to fill the empty void in their lives.

    Some, but not all.

If you're not having any success, find someone like Roblimo, considers himself an expert at picking up chix and is ready to dispense a handful of advice because he has a pleasant and apparently subservient wife who meets his needs.

    Agreed.

I am a little sexist. I'm also a lot sarcastic.

  10. My Neighbor Said... on Carpal Tunnel Surgery? · · Score: 2

My neighbor was a mechanic for probably 20+ years, and he got CTS from wrenching all day long. When they did the CTS surgery on him he said that it was mostly fairly painless, the only things about it he didn't like was that:

    A) He couldn't use his hands very much for almost 3 weeks afterwards - his doctor recommended an extended healing time in his case.
    B) During the surgery they actually sliced open his lower arms and used a scalpel to dig out all of what he called the "Carpal Tunnel Junk" that collects in your arms.

All I know is that it sounds like a great operation, and since I have recently started showing signs myself, I got a trackball and a Microsoft Natural Keyboard (Hey - they're actually really nice if you can find an older style one with the full size arrow keys) I have been feeling a lot better.
