Personally I am so glad to hear this. About 100 or so of those complaints came from our company. The biggest tool spammers use to cover their tracks is bad whois info. How can you serve papers on someone if you don't have an address? Even the wimpy CanSpam law can't be enforced without an address. Without one its not worth the disk space it takes up.
This information is also needed for admin work between networks. This information is used by Systems Admins to contact each other when things get weird between networks not just for catching spammers. It a great time saver when a sick server on a network is hitting ours to be able to type "whois" and find an email address and a phone number for the person you need to talk with to fix the problem. These are helpful calls between networks to keep it all working. Its not so much contacting the owner as much as contacting the SysAdmin.
I do see the problem with personal sites and whois info that contains personal information. What we do for the sites we host that aren't corporate sites is we carry the Techinal Zone Contact Address and phone number as the address and phone numder for the site. This way the site can be contacted and the owners can be indirectly contacted without their home addresses or phone numbers exposed to the strange. This way if some weirdo calls they get to talk to us. Most hosting companies will do this. If they don't move your site to one that does.
You can't complain about having to have updated information on your whois. You agreed to it when you bought your domain. It was in the EULA.
Besides how can you enjoy the smell of burning mail servers if you don't know where to build the fire?
As bad as I hate AOL I must say the is a first that I say "Way to go AOL". It made me laugh so hard I peed on myself. I think auctioning the guys head would have even been better. I could hang his head to rot over my mail server.

Yes DARPA did start it (I worked on the project when I was in the Navy in the early 70's) Then no one but the goverment and schools or goverment contractors were allowed on it. DARPA found that in order to make it work they had to free it to get others to pay for it. Think of the cost if only the US paid for ALL the computers, severs, fiber, and all the other parts of the infastructure. You see they just didn't "allow" non-citzens to "use" it. I think you need to find out "how" it all works. The whole thing works off of private networks and WHOLE lot of private networks that "allow" the public to use their private network. Right now my privately own network will talk to the privately owned network owned by/. when I hit the submit button. If you go to my website you can go their only because "I" allow you to.
No matter what anyone says the Internet is not free. I think open is a better word. Everyone pays to use it so it ain't free. If you are using it for free you have to be stealing it from someone. (want to pay my data line bill?) That's the beauty of the system. It is owned my any one person or group.
This free shit is what spammers and other assholes use to protect their spreading of their garbage and misuse of the network
Don't get me wrong I AM NOT taking up for ICANN. I just see a buch of self promoting fools that just want the status of being on the board. They do nothing to help control the misuse of the network and they are the only people that can do something to stop things like spam. Want to stop spam? Take them out of root! Very simple. Take away their IP blocks. If they have no IP numbers they can't get on.
ANY goverment or the UN is the WRONG people to put in charge
Yes with MS DNS you must set the reverse lookup on all IPs. Reverse lookups stop a lot of spam too. About 60% of the hits on our mail servers are rejected and we get only about one call in 2 months that someone can't send real mail to our due to a bad set up by their Admins. Normally this resluts in a call to their Admins and the records get straight and the mail goes through.
There are laws against the being cruel to aminals. I mean subjecting the penguins to direct contact with such sub-lifeforms as SCO lawyers and employees. If we just kill all lawyers we wouldn't have problems in the world like this.
We need more penguins and less lawyers in the world. It would even smell better
Charging ANY price would then make any spam sent to you legal as long as the price was paid. It may make the price of spam go up but it would increase the amount sent and then there would be NOTHING you could do to stop it. If you snail mail box is anything like mine 75% of your mail is the useless waste of trees. Go to the Post Office and try to stop it. you can't! Why? ITS PAID FOR!
As a mail server operator. Who get the penny??? Me the guy that has to put of with collecting it? I doubt it!
Open Relays aren't as big as a problem as it used to be. The hardest problem we have is infected home computer that have been turned into spam zombies. Spammer like dartmail.net well you just block them no problem, but with infected home computers what do you do? Reporting the fact the machine is infected to their ISP is useless. Blocking the IP range doesn't work because they don't use the same machine twice.
We block about 60% of our spam just my requireing authication, resolving DNS, and blacklisting.
All it would take to get rid of the last of them is PUT THE BASTARDS IN JAIL!
What does giving money to the poor have to do with spam and spammers????? If we didn't have spammers my company could donate MORE money to causes. Even the cause of helping the poor close to me (Like me!) I may own a business, but like most the rich have their hands in my pockets so bad. I live off of dried beans and rice!
My thought on the poor spammer... HE GOT WHAT HE DESIRVES> His poor child??? Yes what about all the children LIKE MY OWN getting his penis enlargments spam!!!
Their was less crime in the Wild West of America than there is today. Why?? Actions like this against bad people by the common folks.
Whatever it takes we need to get rid of spam.
Maybe a hanging would be nice..... I got the rope.
Take away the IPs being used by Spammers this would free up a bunch. I see whole blocks of address being used by these a_sholes to cover their tracks when blocking them from our mail server. Right now over 22,000 addresses are block on our server. These could be used by someone else for real use, and even with 22,000 addresses block the sh_t keeps coming so there is still more that that for the asking.
I agree with the others too. Why does a house hold need public IPs. NAT does work very well and does give some secutiry to the local network.
Yes they do and as a Nation they have the right (technically) to make their own laws, but this doesn't keep the DEA year after year from coming and pulling the crop up, and we're talking about "rope kind of" hemp not the smoking kind. (really there is a difference).
You can trust you goverment ask any Indian
That word they call that law... Wasn't it the word they used for those long haired dope smoking guys that dressed up like sombody else and threw a bunch of tea in the drink?
Let me hijack a cigarette truck and see who goes to jail.
You say there is no way that Bush could send troops to the LA City Council and quote history in the 1830? A piece of history that maybe only rings so true in my head because I come from the survivors of such a law, and it all happened right here in the state I now live in, Georgia. Yes in the US of A.
Back then Gold was found in the Cherokee Nation. My people did not want the raping of the land for the yellow metal and certainly did not want it mined for free. Besides it was our yard. (Shouldn't a person have the right not to let a a stranger dig holes in his yard?), but being stupid savages we didn't want to bend to the will of progress and let a chosen few get rich.
So.....
An attack was staged on some white families that lived near the border at where friendly with the Cherokees and supported their stand on the issue. They were all killed. Arrows and such where spread through the area to put the blame on the Cherokees. So the State of Georgia stood up and said look what these savages have done! We must wipe them out! The National Guard was called (Yes the same one here today!) and our land was invaded. Supposely to free us also from our savage ways to make us civilized, never if we where called the "Civilized Tribe"
Then the Feds where called in and to make a longs story short the man's whose picture in on a twenty dollar bill. Rounded us all up that was left after killing off those that wouldn't leave without a fight, and march us through the winter to Oklahoma. 14,000 died along that trail. Many more that were not counted died before the removal. A lot of people... Women, kids, old people. Not just warriors. My own Grandfather was killed by the Georgia National Guard INSIDE is own home defending his family when they came in the middle of the night like cowards, and a man's home is suppose to be his castle.
All for what... Money and Power for who? The USA! Money then had the color of the yellow metal. Now days money is black and comes in barrels. Think about this short version of this old story and see if it relates to the happenings of today. Can't happen here??? It already has many times. It just wasn't your family in the pickle barrel so you forget history. I was taught this story as a child. I am now fifty years old, fought in Vietnam for these right that they are taking away, and now a crimmal for even writing these words. (Yes desention is now a crime against the government of which was born from desenction). Yes a simple act of writing is now a crime if you write the wrong words. (Didn't we used to call that communism?)
My point is history does repeat itself because we forget the lessons of the past. It can happen here! And it is LOOK AROUND! All I ask is for you to look at the past and be leery of your own government. They are there for their own good not yours. Like someone else commented. People that would run for an office is the ONE you don't want in office! Some people here have commented "Vote them out" in the last election here in Georgia I couldn't vote for the candidate I wanted there was no space for a "write in" (My vote was for Nader) so mine didn't;t even get to count. When you only have two crooks to vote for you are going to get screwed. Do you really think there are "two parties" or only "one" power at work here.
Just something is think about.........
Being a Father of now an 18 year old that has been playing with computer since he was 10 or so and can say he has found his own path to learning code.
Like all kids cool sites and programs are spread by word of mouth and email. Gaming what else hold a young mind! There are a lot of free game writing program out there and have been out there. He wrote his first games around 13 using a free Windows based program writng DOS games in basic. At 15 he got together with 4 of his freinds built their own development team. Built a little DOS based role playing game and even sold it.
Imagine letting my 12 year old inside my computer? Personally what I have seen I would rather have a 12 year old inside of there more than someone my age (49 jesus you're an old fart!) Kids these days grow up with it they teach it in the schools, and the kids have a need to figure out what makes it work (ust like the rest of us geeks)
I agree that html is a good starting point. I mean what do you need but Notepad and a book of code and the passion to learn. Its a easy (see what I did!) and pretty simple language to learn. Kids understand the pratical application of the language and can see the results quickly through a web browser. After learning html XML is fairly easy and this looks like this is where the world is headed. Notepad is better I think to learn the basics of coding anyway, AND no need for high dollar development software.
There is also a plus to this track of learning. High dollar development software does make the job faster and easier (yes I use it yes I do this for a living and time is money) but starting out with it you don't learn what make it work you just "see" it in the WYSIWYG. They also learn to get by and make what they have work.
I guess the moral of my dribble is I think will have plenty of good programmers in the future.
If you had to deal with the spam problem for a living like I do you would understand aohell's view on this. If you try to send mail to our servers you get the same reply basically. Spammers have screwed up the world of email, but so have people setting up their own mail servers and leaving them open for the spammers to use. Why not use comcast's mail system? Our mail server will not accept anything from an address unless it has a MX record. I suggest if you want to run your own mail pay the money get a T1 with static IP's and set up DNS records.
By only allowing traffic from vaild mail servers our spam drops and we can to some degree track the spammers that do get through. At least we get their subnet and can kill that. Even with this some 60% of the traffic is spam. We move about 300 MB of mail a week (no we are not that big) that means that 180 MB of trash traffic passes through a private network and we as a company have to pay the bandwith for that. That is a lot of money spent in order for someone else to make a living at our cost AND without making a dime here.
No I don't like aolhell I do support what they have done and think more IPS's should do the same. I do think that aohell should have done this 5 years ago. I even hold aohell partly to blame for the spam mess. After all they used to love to sell your address, and the certainly love to fill your box with their dodo.
I support freedom on the Internet, but the Internet isn't "free" our phone bill on this little place is $900.00 a month. We would be happy to host your DNS or allow mail relay from your server for a monthly fee. Somebody has to pay me for sifting through all this spam and keeping the theives out. Somebody has to pay my boss so he can pay me!
Personally I am so glad to hear this. About 100 or so of those complaints came from our company. The biggest tool spammers use to cover their tracks is bad whois info. Not that I would ever do anything like thatWhy it is always a good idea to let the fox gurad the hen house. I men after all you end up with a fat fox and yourself with nothing to eat!
WOW My very own Sun box from WallyWorld!!!! I'm going tomorrow!
As bad as I hate AOL I must say the is a first that I say "Way to go AOL". It made me laugh so hard I peed on myself. I think auctioning the guys head would have even been better. I could hang his head to rot over my mail server.

There REALLY is a flavor of Linux for everyone! OK MS top that one!
Please excuse us but our network will be down while we upgrade our systems to the new Lesbian OS
By the way Bill while your out could you pick me up a Taco for lunch.
Did I miss something when I installed Linux?
Where are the nekkid chicks on my wall paper?
