sucks up twice, thrice, a dozen times the bandwidth of the original worm

Nice to talk out your ass. yes they are annoying, but lets go over some numbers from my system I run:

I run a MailMarshal 5.5 system. It is configured to block all executable attachments. A blocked attachment is parked for 7 days and a text only notification without attaching the original message is sent back to the "sender". If the sender replies according to the instructions (which is to add 1 randomly generated 6 letter word to the subject and delete it from the body) then the original message is released and the sender added to the MailMarshal whitelist so they get no more messages. Our McAfee virus scanner is after it and just deletes any virii that get through. Now for the numbers:
    1. MyDoom emails in: 411
    2. Bandwidth of said emails at 32.3KB average: 106202 Kb transferred
    3. Automated replies I sent out: 398
    4. Bandwidth of replies (original message NOT attached) at 1.7KB: 5,412Kb
    5. Amount of emails in that were replies from other companies mistakenly saying my users had sent them the virus: 239
    6. Bandwidth at 33.8KB = 64,626Kb

So, I've sent out nearly twice as many blocked message notifications than the other with an option to whitelist receivers that are mistakenly ID'd. My emails have taken 11x LESS bandwidth as their error messages and nearly 20x less than the virus messages themselves.

The problem isn't necessarily always the software and hype without research is even worse.

    You are not entirely correct.

The average healthy human eye is most responsive to blue and yellow and least responsive to red. This is the reason you see red and blue lights in dim-lit areas. Blue lights stand out more and are easier to read whereas red-lights cause shorter term night and/or flash blindness[1]. This why you see redlights come on in emergancy situations in things like submarines, powerplants, etc. It's more gentle on the eyes.

For more information, try taking this course on human-machine interaction. The first 1/3rd of the course is how the eyes and ears work and basic perception modelling.

    -Ab

[1] Night/fash blindness is what accurs when you get spot images in your eyes from extremely bright light, such as a camera flash, looking at the sun, turning on the bathroom light when you wake up in the middle of the night to relieve yourself, or walking outside after a fresh snow. It is caused by your pupil allowing too much light in at once and your retinal cells (mostly rods in this case) releasing too much neurotransmitters and not having enough to replace, rendering them incapable of sending more out until their supply has been replenished.

Phase II is cell phone geo-location. The phone companies all have the ability, it's the local 911 call-centers that don't. Ketosis is a side effect of an IMPROPERLY followed Atkin's diet. Part of that is because Dr. Atkin's released enough of his diet to hook people. They start phase I (carb starving) and see immediate results then they never move onto Phase II (Carb stepping) or Phase III (Carb maintenance). Because most people don't read enough to know how or why slow their weight loss down, they tend to fail the diet and gain it all back or worse, do severe damage to themselves.

Also, anyone that does a diet, the FIRST thing you should do is talk to your doctor. I did the Atkins and lost 34 pounds in 31 days (310 to 276). I went back to my doctor for my monthly check-up and she took me off of it and did blood tests. My test came back fine and I was greenlighted to go back on it, but I haven't yet. I've been off of it for 6 months and put 12 pounds back on.

At the same time, my girlfriend was told to stay off of the Atkin's diet because she had a really bad kidney infection when she was a freshman in college. She spent 3 days in the hospital and has a lot of scarring on hers. Her body can't process the ketone byproducts of fatty-acid metabolism. (she also pees every other hour like clockwork). Because she can't do the Atkin's, I've chosen not to go back on it. It makes it a bit inconvenient to cook meals.

At the risk of being branded a troll or otherwise modded unfavorably, I would give them some form of MS operating system IF AND ONLY IF MS gave it to them for free, or at a much reduced price (i.e. part of their justice department settlement). Now hear me out for a moment as to why before tar and feathering me:

    • 1. These are 6th graders. Given the results of what happened in my 6th grade through 12 grade, only about half are going to college. Of those, only half are going to major universities. The rest will be going to tech or community colleges. Even the ones that goto college, the majority of their computer use during school and after graduation will most likely be software run on MS systems. The point of school is to prepare children for the rest of their lives. As much as I'd like to see a revolution and topple the MicroSoft monopoly, is it fair to these kids to put them at a disadvantage for jobs such as secretary, CAD Tech, Architect, Wireless Engineer, office administrator, or some sort of lab tech because they are unfamiliar with MS systems, which run 99% of these machines and software? Giving them some other OS puts them ata disadvantage at getting into their respectiev field by making them predisposed towards other systems. It is along the lines of teaching ebonics to a child and wondering why they don't interview well.

    • 2. There are more apps available for MS systems than Linux systems, free or not. This has been part of the Linix/OSS community's myself inclded) problem. There just isn't enough software out there to compete. Too much of what is available is for niche power users and not for general public consumption. Now we are talking about the Dells, and not the Apples, because Apple pretty much has the market cornered on educational software and classroom integration.

Given the opportunity, I would set up a dual boot system to expose them to a second, different OS. Probably RedHat or SlackWare for their simplicity. I know I was raised in my school on Apple IIe and nothing else. EVERYTHING we had from the time I was in 4th grade till I graduated in '94 was Apple IIe. It made for a rough transisition when I went to college and had to relearn everything on VMS systems, Windows, DOS, and MacOS. I consider myself rather tech oriented, but it was still somewhat of a learning curve to use a mouse for the first time, or to program in a GUI.
