The way we do it in Iowa makes sense, but it still can be used to gerrymander a bit. I think that the legislature rejected the first two attempts at redrawing the districts this year because they (not sure if it was the "independent board" drawing the districts or the legislature) were trying to get a bit creative.
This basically forces nicely shaped districts. Of course the large tracts of rural areas with a few population centers helps too.
THat's when you leave out some of the implementation details - that's the "cloud" in the network diagram - no need to get too technical when dealing with the boss...
In all seriousness, I think that they can. I remember seeing somewhere that the heat signature on your face was as good of an identifier as a fingerprint.
I went to school at Iowa State and attended 1 of the VEISHA "riots" (on the edge of the crowd). In the case of those riots, it was just too much beer on the first warm night of spring for too many people. Nothing more than that - no politics, no racial strife, no terrorists running amok.
The safest place for you when something like that is going on is anyplace else. Large numbers of people in a small place can change direction quickly and injure or trample people, and the police are not there in sufficient numbers to protect themselves, let alone people or property.
In many cases, it is cheaper to purchase the goods than it is to build them yourself. Those who are doing that are doing so more for enjoyment than a desire to save a great deal of money.
Lets hope that this can be a further trend to people doing things for themselves and innovation will surely be the real benefit from this. Not only will innovation be the key but also self satisfaction and a feeling of acomplishment that so many people lack in todays society.
This seems to be a big problem in the west in general, people are either deciding kids are too expensive to afford or are just deciding not to have them (why?)
Social Security. Before that, you're "retirement plan" was the help of your children. Kids being what they are, you typically had a herd of them so that one or two might end up being productive enought to take care of you in your twilight years (and to provide a ready labor source on the farm:)
Social Security broke that bond. No longer do you need to put up with the hassle of kids - someone elses kids will pay for your retirement.
Lots of people mention the "tragedy of the commons" - this is an example of it, but it is rarely acknowledged as such.
I heard a story once about an election in some central American country. They were holding their first democratic elections and were using used voting machines from Chicago.
Mayor Daley was elected the new President:)
You're probably right. What's more concerning is that it doesn't sound like voter fraud is discovered and prosecuted with enough zeal. It should have serious consequences.
And, sometime in the future, another hurrican will hit Florida.
Not to mention that the two cents he's kicked into the campaign so far are many millions of dollars more than $0.02.
THAT is insightful.

They also have non-public information that they've developed on their own (donation records and stuff like that).

COBOL has its place in the back office servers at businesses, and there's enough of it out there that it's not going away anytime soone.
I've not found one, but is there a good GPL COBOL compiler available?
And that's the one that you'd least like a visit from.
In all seriousness, I think that they can. I remember seeing somewhere that the heat signature on your face was as good of an identifier as a fingerprint.
Use it to find and take care of meth labs.
It's those evil smokers that they're after!
Killing a governor wouldn't be as "good" as killing a President, but it would make the nightly news.
No, but it only takes one or two members using the mob as a cover to do "bad things" (TM)

You'd have a "flash posse" then.
Plus, instead of having to conspire with a bunch of people, it would only take one or two to get it started.
All of that chaos would make it difficult for the secret service to protect [that person] from the nut looking to do damage.

I do agree with this!
Which was my joke - guess I forgot the :)

California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, and New Jersey.
Eh - one side of the world or another - pretty close either way.
In the middle ages, stabbing == debate and drunken orgies == consensus building
I sure as heck don't want someone from New York voting for my city council candidate!
