My 600 Mhz P3 laptop has no problems at all. I use Win2k, and the only real dissapointment is the fact that the visualizer gives only 9 or 10 FPS. I have used iTunes while running big unzips or compiling software. No skips, not even when streaming files from my G3. Which incidentally, at 300 Mhz, gets better visualizer framerates than the P3.
You've got nothing on my favorite mouse-the Apple version 1 ADB Mouse. Fits more comfortably than any other mouse I've ever used. If only it had three buttons and a scroll wheel. Circa 1985 or early 1986 and still fully functional.
Yeah, I was trying to put some HHGTTG reference together, and I just can't get it right. Doesn't have the right feel. I guess Franky and Benjy mouse will just have to keep doing the talk show circuit.
Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that Apple rolls all the updates up to a given point into combo updaters, which have saved me a lot of time doing an install. I installed 10.2 right before 10.2.6 came out, and I had one 90 meg download instead of 5 40 meg ones. Hugely helpful.
I am writing this on my(mostly stock) Beige G3/300. I have 256 megs of ram, and the only other upgrade is a ATI Rage 128. With those two upgrades this machine is nearly as responsive as a lot of the newer machines and it costs a lot less. I have used a Dual 1Ghz G4(the mirrored door model) and it feels about the same speed wise. Sure, Safari takes a very small amount of time less to launch. But that is so small, maybe a couple of seconds. I don't use this machine for iMovie or anything like that, and it suits my developing needs just fine. Apple has done a great job to make the new OSes work on old machines like mine. I may even try Panther once the XPostFacto people figure out the needed support....
Yeah, it's really funny to watch this repeated update fiasco and see how almost nobody even utters a peep of anything negative about it. If this were Microsoft making all these screwups with point updates you know we'd be all over them, tearing them to pieces. I've made comments a few times and gotten zero attention and no responses.
A friend of mine installed a Microsoft Update on his Win2k desktop recently, and he had to reformat and reinstall. At least you don't have to reformat to do a clean install of OS X(it's called archive and install).....
Huh? How is that acceptable? No way to uninstall if you have problems? Systems hosed so bad they can't be repaired by any known method short of a complete reinstall?
You're wrong. There is a free patch. There are a few very loud people with problems. Mostly people with early G4's I think.
Microsoft is bad enough, but I don't recall a lot of their updates causing people to need to reformat and reinstall from scratch once a month. To this day I can't understand why Apple isn't getting ripped to shreds for these terrible update problems. Is it just because only a few people are affected and everyone else just doesn't care?
Actually, MS patches DO cause problems, as equally minor, but there is no fix other than reformatting. With OS X, you can do the 'archive and install' or just apply the freebie patch.
They kinda do that. Only kinda. To get a prerelease of Panther, you have to be a thrillseeking developer with enough money to pay $500 a year for the privilege of pre-release software.
How about a slashdot.txt file which can ask for mirrors(so that an automated mirror-maker could be set up), ask not to be linked to, or ask that mirrors _not_ be made, or even provide a list of mirrors?
Inconsistent location of files./usr ,/usr/local ,/bin ,/sbin, and the like are not intuitive and not consistently used either. I shudder at the thought of trying to explain this structure to my wife or mother.
Your wife/mother shouldn't ever need to see the command line in a good OS these days(unless she is a geek, but then it can be explained).
Dependency hell. This can and should be resolved automatically without needing user intervention.
Almost solved. See apt-get, urpmi, portage.....
Too much dependance on editing configuration files by hand. While this can and should always be an option, I've had to do it too many times where it was obvious that the feature should have been accessible through a gui. (most recently, getting samba to boot up automatically instead of being started by hand. Not hard but I can't believe I'm the only one who ever wanted to do that.)
Amen. Coming off a Mac-only background, this took me a good couple of weeks to learn. All configuration end users ever need to do should be doable in a comfortable GUI.
Awkward and inconsistant user interfaces. Virtually all linux applications are guilty of this at some level. Everything from abiword to KDE/GNOME to the GIMP to xv has it's weird interface issues. (I love GIMP but it's interface is bizarre) This has been steadily improving but there is a long way to go still
Yes. Again, with my heavy Mac background, this was a huge jolt. Every desktop seems to have its own interface guidelines, which conflict with others. gtk progs can't put their menu at the top of the screen a la Mac OS, but qt ones can. I have trouble with copy/paste between the two.
Note that I am not your average user, as I do do things like compile my own (leaner, meaner)kernel, and so on. I just think that until I can have my grandparents sit down and just use it(reguardless of what platform they are used to), there is room for improvement. For this, KDE is best overall, but things like OpenOffice look different(especially if you use the Mac-style menu bars).

There's your google link.
You're welcome.
They still haven't fixed the problems in the framebuffers. Anyone know why this is so low priority?

What's the secret to the google link? just add '&PARTNER=GOOGLE' to the end of the URL? Is it that simple?

Perhaps it has to sound different if played backwards to be music?

If you hate Apple so much, please, do me a favor and go use Windows instead!

I use wpoison on my system...what is the legal status of it now? The license agreement used to say you had to link to their site. What now?
Clarus is a Dogcow. That make it a she, if it where a he, it would be dogbull.
See here for more dogcow info.
Ford, you're turning into a penguin.
And people say BSD is dying?
It should be:
Windows is dying.

Technically, Mac OS X has some FreeBSD in it, as elements of FreeBSD have been used to update Darwin.

To heck with FP, I think I will just make the first /. post on GLD. It is now 12:00 EDT 6-20-03.
