  1. Because... on What Keeps You Off of Windows? · · Score: 1

MicroSoft keeps creating bastard children of established languages - i.e. Access/SQL Server's SQL support. It's just not very compliant. I also find it a maze of menus/apps to find what I need to do, when a quick *nix shell would have the job done in a fraction of the time. Piping, greping, etc. Compilers: free and abundant. Great for any student or professional. Distributions come with a multitude of (FREE as in speech and/or beer) that can perform many tasks that must be bought from 3rd party vendors, not included in MS Windows. (Some are availiable for MS's platforms, however). Many of these programs can be used in conjuction for greater usability. Not always so in windows. But above all this... when an application crashes, the rest of my non-MS system doesn't begin to experience other problems that lead to an OS crash.

  2. Re:How does Canadian corporate life compare on Corporate Work in the US vs. Canada? · · Score: 1
Canadian French is what French was like when they came to Canada, with very little change except for slang. Much like Canadian English is to British English, except that we've begun to sell out to Americanized English.

FYI: I've spent 5 years studying the evolution of the Canadian dialects of English and French.

It's odd the English and French show so much hostility based on Language, when the French are largley responsible for the evolution of the language to what it is today.

Quebec French is substantially different in pronunciation and vocabulary, though easily mutually comprehensible, with the French of the Académie française. This is due to the long history of French in Canada and the fact that French immigrants to Canada kept speaking the French of the Ancien Régime while in France the French revolution led to the standardization of bourgeois Parisian French.
So, there you have it... the French language was re-created in France after the revolution.

  4. Has anyone ever wondered... on MyDoom Windows Worm DDoSing SCO · · Score: 1

.. if SCO is doing this themselves? Think about it... what better way to make hackers everywhere lose credibility than by releasing a virus that DoSs SCO.com?

Then they can blame "those" linux hacktivists for causing all this trouble.
Once again they can seem the victim.. yet again, after all, we stole their IP, and now we steal their business by knocking down their web server.

Or maybe I've seen too many X-File/Conspiracy TV shows....

  5. Vgetty on Suggestions for Computer Answering Systems? · · Score: 5, Informative

Vgetty From the web page: Vgetty turns your voice modem into an answering machine. It adds voice capabilities to mgetty. This means, that you can handle data, fax and voice calls on one telephone line. How good all this works depends strongly on the modem you have. There are many modems with bad voice implementations and quite a few more expensive ones with a good hardware and firmware.
