  1. Re:How to conduct human trials on Gene Therapy Approach 'Completely' Protects Mice From HIV Infection · · Score: 1

In those cases, and someone correct me if I'm wrong here, you don't actually go around infecting people to see if it worked. You give a large sample population the drug/placebo then follow them over time. If you have enough people, statistically speaking someone is bound to contract HIV. So you just compare the % of people that contracted HIV over time that had the drug vs the people who had the placebo. These types of trials take a long time.

  7. Re:and yet NYC still has traffic jams on Rude Drivers Reduce Traffic Jams · · Score: 1

You mentioned I-94, which passes though Illinois, so I thought I might point out this little tid-bit of information:

Illinois is somewhat well-known for being a hard-ass state as far as laws and regulations go (especially with regard to driving privileges.) However, this one little gem of a press release from Illinois state senator Dan Rutherford almost makes up complete for it:

"Springfield - For two years the state's 'left lane law' has sought to increase safety on Illinois' highways and interstates by making it a moving violation for a driver to remain in the left lane of a multi-state highway and detain the traffic flow, said State Senator Dan Rutherford (R-Pontiac)." Found here: http://www.danrutherford.com/leftlanelaw.asp

You argument about going the speed limit is completely irrelevant. Speed has nothing to do with obstructing traffic in the left lane. If you are obstructing traffic, move over. Period. Failure to do so is in violation of Illinois (and some others) state law.

Going through the press-release, they even make an informal mention to the exact situation you bring up:

"...slow drivers in the left lane aren't just an irritation, but can be a serious driving hazard leading to road rage, tailgating, increased congestion, and of course accidents, on roads where people are driving at high speeds."

If someone is coming up on you, you really should just man up, move over, and be safe. Even move back if you want (given there isn't anyone else behind you, see: bullet points of the press release.)

Here is a link to the actual Illinois Statute that states all this information. I direct your attention to section 701: DRIVING ON RIGHT SIDE OF ROADWAY; OVERTAKING AND PASSING, ETC. It outlines everything in fairly plain language.

Call me crazy but I thought drives were sealed air-tight (or close to it.) Where exactly would the lubricant go if it evaporated off the platter?

My initial impression was that the lubricant was re-collected as it condenses similarly to the oil pump system of a vehicle, but that's just a completely unscientific guess. If that's not the case and the lubricant becomes completely unusable as it evaporates off, does this mean that now there will be a buildup "gunk" in the drive?

Seriously though, at what point is TOO much broadband? Belive me, I'm the usualy the first advovate of new technologies and ever increasing speeds, however for my current "consumer" needs I have a 6Mb download and 768Mb upstream (Comcast Cable) and even what I used to have it download 24/7 I would rarely max it or sustain it, and still done. Truthfully, the only reason I even have the 6Mb is because it came with the 768 up. Thats what I really pay for, is the pressious upstream.

Along with whatever these 24Mb consumers may want to download, you have to also consider what they don't know they are downloading or transimting, and ever so faster speeds now (think: spam) now, you can have a single machine on Be's network spam what used to take 10 "traditional" (think slower botneted) computers on slower connections. While you can't blame Be for empowering consumers with their services (in fact I salivate at the very thought of a world of real time application delivery and centralized goodness. VRML anyone? I can wait untill I can impracticaly fly though the internet! Watch out garbage files, here I come!)

Don't get me wrong I have used lynx quite a bit but you won't find me on lynx when I just want to mindlessly surf and entertain myself. I want graphics, DHTML, JavaScript, CSS, and pretty layouts just as much as the next person. Call me not as hard-core but then, the whole point is trying to get your average users to use a "safer" browser right?

How would you over-clock a laser chip anyway? Increasing a lasers power output, just as increasing chip voltatge does not make the laser travel "faster" so burning a hole in it is probably an unlikely scenario. However, I really do wonder what the limiting factor in the chip will be for it's speed, certainly not the photons but perhaps initially some other aspect of the chip in its current state will be unable to accommodate the maximum possible speed of the traveling photons.

    • TightVNC
    • RealVNC
    • WinPCap
    • MineBug
The only legitimate piece of spywear on that list is Minebug whatever it is. Perhaps this is Microsoft's way of removing "Unwanted" software from PC's running their operating system? In the description, they describe each item for exactly what it is. They tell you VNC is a valid remote administration utility, and they tell you that "WinPCap is an Open Source Windows Packet Filtering Library." However the fact that these items are listed and anyone not knowing any better can effectively make an administrators life (read: mine) hell by a click of a button bothers me somewhat.
