A software solution would be just as easy. After all, it could be as simple as an executable that puts itself in the startup menu/registry. Inserting a CD with Autorun is easier than fiddling behind the computer.

The more likely workaround would be devices you put between your keyboard and the computer. Easier? No. Cheaper? No. Marketable? Maybe.

It only gets major once it gets ignored. It's our resposibility to stop the breaches when they start, before they become widespread policy (Which, in this case, apparently wasn't true, though the officer did lie and say it was). And the other breaches are unrelated, separate incidents. Much as people might like to think otherwise, police forces don't coordinate much with each other.

I would say most US police are the same way, and some Canadians aren't. This isn't a major civil liberties breach because it's an isolated incident, not far reaching. That's not to say that it doesn't need to be addressed and stamped out to prevent it from going too far. Police oversight is vital to protect the Rodney Kings of the world.

In the Wall Street Journal (The only paper I read. Is is great? Well, it's free for me. Free as in mandatory subscription.) they said it was linked to several heart attacks. Something happened, unrelated, that ruled that trial invalid, if I remember correctly, so they didn't have to tell anyone that there was a risk of heart attack.

Ironic as it is, Firefox will become more viable when IE7 is compliant, because then it will render webpages "correctly" when they are designed with IE in mind. IE7 doesn't really have the extra bloat that Firefox has picked up, either (key word: extra. If I use Firefox, I'm STILL going to have some parts of IE running anyway). Well, there are always going to be incompatibilities with a new major version. And it's not so much that they are leaving the heavy lifting to others, it's just that all those little things that don't work the same need to be fixed in various software programs. Thousands of software programs. That cost is divided amongst all developers. Then the deployment of those changes. And marketing. Etc. These are not Microsoft's responsibility.

That said, I've used Vista Beta 2. It's Alpha quality, at best. (Of course, "Beta" has become somewhat of a buzzword. Often what should be a "Release" is labelled "Beta" to give it a "Cutting edge" feeling.)
