"The order of MM/DD/YYYY comes when one is speaking out loud. Let's take my birthday. I would rather say I was born on "April 15th" then "15th of April". In English, at least, it makes grammatical sense. (Spanish, the only other language I'm more than passingly familiar with would say "quince del (of) abril" so perhaps that's where the original change came from"

I disagree. In England, it wouldn't be considered gramatically correct to say "I was born April 15th". The correct phrase would be "I was born on April the 15th", or "I was born on the 15th of April". The latter is more commonly used.

But let's not get into an argument about which type of grammar is the best, or logical, or the most useful.

We still haven't implemented the metric system fully over here in the UK yet. I was brought up on centimetres, millometres and kilograms, but I still travel in miles and weigh myself in stones (We only use pounds (lb) for cooking. That way it's less confusing when we're talking about the currency, maybe?)

I think that we should leave this argument at "Everybody's Unique", and embrace each other in some kind of huge hug in celebration of cultural diversity.

I think this is kind of a stupid argument. You use whatever system is accepted amongst your culture. Sure, logically and from a purely mathematical standpoint your argument is watertight. I'm used to labelling everything DD/MM/YY. This is what everyone else does, and understands, and it's the date format that I am used to. I don't particulary care about making the system easier to program with.

What you were saying was irrelevant - although I agree with your point. His argument was not about the violence used in the game. His article was not about the violence used in the game. That was merely a paragraph or two. But forget it.

His argument isn't about GTA being a non-violent game! He's looking at why the game has been succesful. How it succeeds where Shenmue failed. Maybe if you'd actually read the article, you'd realise that.

Why can't anyone ever talk about those aspects of GTA, instead of immediatly chiming in with "GTA doesn't cause violence, that's bullshit!"

"When the PSP (Playstation Portable) comes out, Nintendo will have the first real handheld competition in its history." Nobody knows that. Sony could still produce a shambles of a gadget. All the marketing gurus in the world can't ensure a perfect handheld console is birthed from the fabulous loins of the big S. From the looks of it, Sony seem to be aiming this thing at teens/youngadults. I don't really see how this will work, because these people don't play handheld consoles. I come from a large family, and I have many young cousins. Every single one of them that's under the age of 12 carries a GBA everywhere, whereas the older kids have the standard issue mobile phone with a select few also wielding mp3/minidisc players. It seems like Sony have a task on their hands - maybe not so much in selling the product, but in selling the actual games that go with it. This means an expensive console that will really only be used for what it is. Games will probably be secondary to the array of extra features that will no doubt accompany it. Please Note: This is me just talking out of my arse. I don't have a degree in marketing, and I'm probably missing a few points. Feel free to correct me, but please do so in a way that doesn't upset me. I'm a rather sensitive guy.

This just seems to be a problem that you have in terms of the name not being the best indication of what the genre is all about. There is no real word to describe the types of games that I would call "adventure". I suppose you could invent the "Talk-em-up", but most people know what an adventure game is.

Like I mentioned before, the same problem exists with Role Playing Games - you play a role in most games, however an RPG is generally a game where you can build up your characters abilities, upgrade your weapons etc.

It's really not that big a deal.

  9. Re:Adventure is not a True Genre on The Future Of Adventure Games Discussed · · Score: 4, Informative

Just because the genre has the word "adventure" in it, that doesn't mean that any game featuring some kind of adventure automatically joins the genre. In Super Mario World you play the role of Mario, but is that an RPG? 2D Side-scrolling console games were never considered adventures, unless they featured elements such as the ability to communicate with non-player characters, an inventory, some sort of story and puzzles to solve. More importantly, adventure games should not punish you for being a crappy gamer, as long as you can think you should be able to progress through them nicely. "Adventurous" games are not necessarily adventure games, nor do adventure games need to have huge elements of adventure in them.

Well, I guess some people like to play games, and other people like to play movies

I enjoyed the latest Zelda, although it seemed a hell of a lot easier than Ocarina and it did have its flaws. I must also admit to gaining a deep desire to throttle certain sages from certain wind temples, but overall the dungeons were great. I have more of an inkling to play it again than with Ocarina though.

I personally don't see what's wrong with a lot of your flaws. Linearity can also be a good thing, particularly for a game like Zelda, otherwise it just becomes hell on earth to create the dialogue. I don't think the point of Zelda throughout the tale, it's always been more about creating your own image of Link. Which is why he never speaks. And why the cartoon series was incredibly bad.
