No one is asking Shaw to support firewire, all that's being asked is that they stop blocking it. The hardware is present on the boxes they sell, it works and they have no reason to block it EXCEPT to protect their business model.
All the box is for is to provide a service. Shaw should not be allowed to dictate what the consumer decides to do with the service they paid for after it leaves the box.
I was wondering the same thing, the primary strength of Linux/OSS was that it was community driven, with "thousands of eyes" watching over the workings.
Now we get a second story on Slashdot about a single person going AWOL/quitting and putting code & services in jeopardy. Just how common is this with Linux/OSS support ?
If I opened a Post Office who's sole purpose was to assist drug users in locating drug dealers, arranging for drug pickups & deliveries and organizing lists of popular drugs, would that be legal ?? After all, it's not like I'm actually selling the drugs right ?
TPB exists solely to aid people in violating copyright. They also profit from it. Any comparisons to Google or the Post Office are born of ignorance and stupidity.
If following due process and holding a fair trial means you've lost faith in the court system, I think that pretty much shows wich side of the law you stand on..
"Like the vast majority of the population, I don't go to theaters or buy DVDs"
That's an unusual statement to make, unless you happen to live in a third-world country. I assure you the majority of the population where I live does go to movies and buy DVDs.
You're also not fooling anyone with that "it's all crap and not worth paying for" either. I would bet that if your ability to access TPB was cut off you'd scream bloody murder at being prevented from watching the latest crappy formulaic rehashed predictable Hollywood sequel movie
If it's not worth paying for, why watch it at all ?
Very true. When netbooks first appeared, the FOSS community was convinced that this would herald the end of Microsoft as there was no way M$ could adapt fast enough for this new market.
Well, consumer demand for XP and the exceedingly poor performance of Linux on these same netbooks lead to a flood of returns, and the manufacturers responded. Even OSX on netbooks proved more popular that any flavour of Linux and that requires more effort to set up than any Linux distro.
This so called "smoking gun" is really just what the parent poster has described, a desperate effort by the FOSS community to blame someone else for their failings.
Considering that the majority of the "Fuck the RIAA" crowd seem to want no repercussions or damages at all for copyright infringement, then I would have to conclude that yes, these people are just pissed that the RIAA is interfering with their God given right to free music..
Actually, the "doomsday" scenario you describe is pretty much what the Apple crowd are living in right now. And given the rabid zealotry I've seen displayed by the FOSS/Stallman brigade, a world dominated by the GNU/Linux church would be even more terrifying...
Rather typical, instead of offering counterpoints to support Linux, they instead make baseless accusations of bribery and arm twisting on the part of Microsoft.
It's childish and petty, and rather typical of the replies I see on Slashdot whenever some group or organizations failure to embrace Linux is reported.
Any evidence of those wild speculations of yours? And bandwidth does cost money in the real world.
It's a common response from the file-sharing community, big business is killing music and the cure is for artists to give up working for the man and embrace the new internet economy. Trouble is, the basics of this new economy is for artists to give their music away for free and condemn them for trying to earn a living.
The sad thing is, there are so many people who have gotten used to downloading music for free that they've come to see it as an entitlement. And they'll fight tooth and nail to keep their place at the torrent teat...
I assure you that anyone who has worked in a real recording studio with a trained professional studio staff is laughing ther asses off at that comment right now.
Look up "Recording Studio" on WikiPedia. Read the article. Follow some of the links. Hang your head in shame when you realize that a Mac and a copy of Logic Studio does not cut the mustard.
The artists do get paid and are in fact represented by the RIAA.
Does it make you feel better to think your screwing the RIAA than the individual artists ?
Next time you meet a musician, tell him/her that you downloaded their music and didn't pay that stinkin' RIAA any money. I'll bet they'll be so happy!!!
The only Entitlement Mentality I see is from the people who believe they have the moral right to help themselves to other peoples work without compensation.
You can split hairs all you want, but the absolute bottom line of this mess is that people want free stuff and will resist any and all efforts to offer compensation.
Hiding behind "The greater good!" or "It's for freedom" or "#%$@^ the RIAA" is just moral cowardice.
What?? So no has a guarantee of a sustainable livelihood ? Sweet, I guess I can help myself to anything created by anyone else, because they have no right to expect any compensation.
Next time I go to a restaurant, I'll eat and walk out without paying. I didn't agree to compensate the owner before the meal, and he's not "entitled" to any compensation.
No, this has nothing to do about Linux, your zealotry notwithstanding. Try to RTFA before quoting from the party handbook.
It's all about patent infringement. Where this concept of "if it's open source then we don't need to honor copyright or patents unless it suits us" comes from I don't know...
The response you will get here is "Remove all DRM and give you books away for free". Your income will come from the kind souls who take pity on you and send a few coin your way.
Complain or make any effort to get compensated for your work and you'll be painted as "Anti-Freedom".
How much does IBM pay you to cut and paste the same same response to anything that questions the FOSS party line ?
At least they post something original each time instead of parroting the FOSS handbook. Microsoft is an attractive target for the EU, and when they're finished with them Apple will be next in line..
Are we talking about the same Slashdot ?? All I see are self-righteous anti-Microsoft and smug pro-Linux/FOSS posts.
Slashdot ceased to be a proper "news for nerds" site some time ago when the FOSS community started using it as a prime astroturfing territory. I still visit for entertainment and to bait the Linux weenies on occasion...

"sorta spreading illegal material " ??
Like being "a little bit pregnant" ?

DRM ? What DRM are you referring to ? Surely not the imaginary "Vista DRM" FUD that has been debunked numerous times before...
Any evidence of those wild speculations of yours? And bandwidth does cost money in the real world.

Umm, FTP and Usenet come to mind. Torrents are very slow and use an excessive amount of bandwidth.
Why people keep using them is beyond me, unless there's some other reason for promoting the installation of Torrent apps on people's computers...
Now THAT is a mighty thin thread to attach to any sort of sucess for the OLPC project.
But I guess the poor OLPC folk can dream....
Takes 15 minutes you say ? You must either be doing something extremely wrong or have mistaken your computer for some other device, perhaps a toaster.
Honestly, the minute you see an anti-Vista rant that brings up the old canard about "uses too much memory", you know the poster is just recycling FUD.
You still use nuclear reactors that generate waste ? Any modern reactor can re-process the so-called waste and make more fuel.
Funny how the greenies are in love with technology when it's attached to solar/wind/etc and revile it when it's associated with nuclear.
So why do so many devices that use GPL software still use FAT (FAT32) instead of UDF?
If it's a standard and unencumbered by patents (unclear but likely) why the resistance to using it?
"..have a $500 recording setup,.."
I assure you that anyone who has worked in a real recording studio with a trained professional studio staff is laughing ther asses off at that comment right now.

THANK YOU, finally a sane voice and an insightful post as well...
Of course, I'm fully expecting to check Slashdot in the morning and see your post modded as Troll, but thanks again for the effort..
