    My fucking piece of shit computer has become unstable and locks up intermittently. It's been crashing at the most inopportune times, like when I'm in the middle of debugging code. I just spent a shitload of my precious time re-installing everything from scratch and the damn thing still locks up; so, it's the hardware. Piece of shit. I'm about ready to put my foot into the fucking thing. I hate computers but I've been damned to Hell and have to work with them.

    Count me in the 39%.

    Let us say, for argument sake, aliens come to visit. Why would a civilization, any civilization, expend such an enormous amount of energy and resources to travel from one star to another? It wouldn't be to talk. They're either looking for resources or expansion room. If first contact is a small ship and small crew... Don't worry. That was just a scout / surveyor crew. A colony ship, or fleet of ships, (aka an invasion force) will be along soon enough.

    They're not talking about something that requires high-reliability space hardened computers (like avionics). They're talking about cheap nano satellite sensor platforms.

    That's perfectly reasonable for pre-launch. If you get a disagreement before launch, when there should be 100% agreement, that's the perfect time to scrub.

    True. But one could (theoretically) send 10's or even 100's of cheap systems into space for the cost of 1 high reliability space rated system. When you need the high-rel system, by all means use it; but, don't let it limit you in such a way as to prevent launching clusters of small cheap satellites or robots when that's an acceptable option. There are bound to be cases where that's of benefit.

    Unfortunately, I work for a company that's run by MBA's who don't have any engineering accumen. And don't seem to grasp too much. Fortunately they've managed to get us sold to a company with engineers at the top level; so, things might change

    In the area I live my skills don't allow me to move as freely. Particularly in a down economy. I'd been looking for a new job and are continue to do so, just in case the new management doesn't improve things.

    I was just thinking how ironic it was that when I went to college (late '80s) we engineering majors made fun of the business majors because many of them were the wash-outs. Couldn't hack engineering --> change major to business. Now, it seems, we're on the wrong side of that equation.
