That's why Obama - a black man - had so much support from racist Democrats? I'm not following.

That said, I think what you'll find is that, when you get down to the truth, much of the opposition and hatred toward Obama is racist in nature. I mean, objectively, his policies aren't that far off from Bush, who was supposedly a god in the eyes of conservatives. Name one radical departure from Bush on Obama's part. Go ahead - I'll wait. The health care thing? That was Republican before it was Democrat. Anything else? No? Didn't think so.

So if Obama is so much like Bush, why the dislike toward him from the red staters?

A sensible Republican? Now, dammit, don't go confusing me like that. I have it firmly in my head that all Republicans are bat-shit crazy because time and again they put forth the worst, extremist candidates, like Palin, or Romney, or Bachman. I've seen it over and over - Republicans are like Siths: they see only absolutes, never the shades of grey. And here you are, sounding like a reasonable person, yet claiming to be a Republican.

Yes, we are in such a position. Because, at some point, we have to be responsible for our actions. My god, dude, you can't really expect a government to protect us from ourselves. That would lead to every last one of us in a jail cell, just to keep us "safe." In nature, if you fuck up, you die. That's the way it's supposed to be. Kids swallowing these magnets, with no parents around to supervise, deserve to die. That's how our species weeds out the "too stupid to live." I'm sorry if that's harsh - actually, I'm not - but that's reality. If you don't like it, that's your problem, not mine.

He didn't die from it, but should we ban boiling water because kids can be injured by it? Or should we encourage parents to pay more attention to their kids?

So, Obama should've just ignored the fiscal and housing crisis and just let everything fail? And how would that have made the situation better? Look, R's won't admit it, but the country is better off than it was. I'm not an Obama fanboi, by any means, but any objective observer would say that this "train wreck" you mention is just hyperbole.

Absolutely. Except Clinton did nothing on the scale that Bush did. You might throw out White Water and Monica Lewinsky, but those are non-issues if you take away the R's rabid desire to destroy Clinton, at any cost. In contrast, there was 9/11 - sure, most people think it was the Saudis, but there are too many questions unanswered, like the lack of debris, lack of video, lack of an airplane at the Pentagon, for starters - the war in Iraq, the lack of control over the financial markets leading to the crash, etc. You can not compare the two presidencies in terms of "they both did wrong": it's a false equivalent. That, plus the fact that anyone who dared question his Bushness was called liberal, traitor, un-American, etc. Don't even say that didn't happen.

Yes, there's hostility from both sides, but it's hardly equal.

Exactly. It occurred to me the other day: Did the Founding Fathers intend for there to be so many exceptions to the plainly written rules in the Constitution? I mean, take the 4th amendment. It says right there, "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." I don't see the part where it says, "Except when we're crossing the border or getting on an airplane." So why is it that the DHS can treat us any old way they want to, just because we're crossing back into this country or traveling somewhere?

This is just one example among many.
