I thought I would try something different and Install the 10.3.4 upgrade via firewire target disk to my powerbook from my dual G4. Updates usually go well for me.
I mounted the powerbook disk and ran the Apple stand alone installer. The software loaded normally. Restarting the powerbook the restart hung at the Apple screen. I ran repair disk
and permissions and observed huge permissions fixes. Restarted and the Powerbook booted but with some system preference warnings that some were not installed properly ( apple time clock) I remounted the powerbook disk in target disk mode and moved the update to the powerbook. Reinstalled the update and all is well. Mind you I did run Permissions and Tech Tool Pro to optimize the directory. Powerbook is now as fast or faster than ever. I run it on a Win2k network and there are no problems at all. The last time I will try the Firewire trick.
It always amazes me to see dependent windows users are IE.
The desktop metaphor seems lost on them. Coming from the Mac side, it also amazes how people are willing to give up so much control to their computers. Most people in my office rely on IT's to back up data, install software on their own mobile boxes. They have no desire to inquire and learn because they simply don't want to. FUD rules and quite frankly, it fits the corporate mold quite nicely. I have people in my office who are afraid to look out side the company for support when they need it. Now tha's control! Me, I've did allowed to develope my own OSX niche because it is a curiosity, the IT person likes me, I'm quiet ( but secretly smug) about my efficiency and they recognise I'm on commission not salary.
This was a minor problem compared to some. I have a new
PM Dual 1.25. I installed some aftermarket RAM. My Mac didn't feel right after the install. No major panics, but programs like photshop began to hang ect. Apple Hardware Test wouldn't load so I called Apple. The Apple tech had me on the phone for over an hour, reseting firmware, moving RAM to different slots ect. We came to the conclusion "bad ram". Told me to replace the module and if there were further problems they would walk me through any procedure to solve the problem. What more could I ask? It was bad ram and the problem was solved. I just counted 47
programs on my dock, one major design program that requires a security dongle and must run in Classic. My Mac is rock solid except Entourage doesn't close sometimes. Looking for a new mail app!
My question is, if Disk Utility is updated in updates, why hasn't the version number of Disk Utility changed? Also,
As I am understanding it, I should only repair permissions
with the Disk Utility from the boot disk, not say from a Disk Utility from another disk as that utilty woould represent permissions from its own disk? I keep a partitioned second
drive which I keep clean save for system updates and to run
disk utilities. My question again is if I run permissions repair form the second drive on my main drive, permissions
will be skewed? I boot my second drive before I run repair
permissions on my main drive.
The poster did not say where he bought his upgraded RAM. Was it apple RAM? Was it paired? This sounds like bad RAM to me.
