  1. Yes and No! on Miguel Says Unix Sucks! · · Score: 1

Many replies here are very uninformed. People should read things to get the basis of what Miguel was saying. He meant to offend you! The better response would be to find out why he did this.

Anyway I agree with him in that we have no reusable components as Microsoft does. GNOME aims to change all of that. I hope they succeed.

He also says that we haven't gotten a Free Software Foundation Operating System for the masses yet. I tend to disagree here. Which masses are we referring to? Programmers LOVE LINUX and BSD. They should.

Uninformed or casual computer users don't.. I don't blame them.. As things are right now I don't believe that Linux belongs on the desktop for office apps. In UNIX "everything is a file" means everything to programmers but next to nothing for a new user. "What do you mean by that?" is the question that would suddenly make your description of Unix to a newbie more technical. I can guarantee you will "lose them" once you begin spouting out meaningless technobabble. That is why its no good. The learning curve is too high..

Of course there is always Applixware and Star Office. Star Office will be GPL'd soon but you have to pay the same amount you would have paid for Win95 when it debuted (upgrade price) for Applixware ($99 USD).

Hopefully this sheds light on what he meant.

They don't have to warn you at all. Any email sent from the company network is company property. Many people have lost their jobs as companies hire Email detectives to find dirt on their people.

If it works despite all of this speculation then you can see how groundbreaking a product this is.

From what I have been reading so far it does work but isn't for high performance settings(like everyday use for me). The question isn't does it exist or does it work but WHY?

Oh yeah and I write TONS of code (C++, LISP, Scheme, Python, C, ASM, PHP, Java, BASIC, COBOL and whatever else I want to learn) so don't blindly state what you obviously don't know.

It is highly doubtful that a driver designed for an os like Windows could work on an OS like linux or the HURD.

If the world could agree on one microkernel and then put a uniform driver layer.... Then something like this would be more feasible. After the driver layer the OS could look-like anything you want.

Since the world doesn't work this way I have many doubts about how well something like this would work. I don't even think it can work but then I had doubts about VMWare too!

If it's true-- great. If not... Oh well it looks like April fools day is a month long...

Someone should probably go and see what the goals of the HURD is before they try and make that claim. HURD is also a MACH kernel. A GNUMACH Kernel. It is capable of running something called a server that acts like Unix. Servers could potentially be written under this architecture that look like windows also. The kewl thing is they can run simultaneously and two users running simultaneously can both tweak their OS without affecting the other. They also are implementing some interesting things called translators which I am not familiar with at all. Really people, do some research before you submit. I don't care if you are an Anonymous Coward. Oh yeah and it isn't what the HURD wanted to be. It is what the HURD IS and what it WILL BE!!! Keep an eye on that OS. Leimy

Thirdly Kmail is open source which allowed "YOU" to fix your problem which wasn't even a secure solution to begin with. If you had been using Outlook your life would have been hell. Just being root on the machine is probably easy on your linux box because you don't seem to have a clue. I am sorry that you are unable to see why open source is better for security fixes and protection by closing obvious open doors that everyone knows about if they read a book about it or even visit a site telling of linux's potential vulnerabilities. No one should trust and OS out of the box to be a secure solution. It's a shame you hit the submit button!! Leimy

I have had limited time to read these posts but I think many people sell MACH short. Microkernel seems to be the way things are going. Modularity in Linux is very popular and necessary to support all the devices that it does and future ones (The kernel can only be reasonably big and still be worth while). Microkernels get away from this monolithic design. I admit that they have yet to prove themselves agains UNIX but I suggest we turn our eyes to the GNU HURD project as I think they will have something to reckon with in a few years.

If your kids talk back, get detentions, try pot, stuff like that then your kids are probably just going through the time in their lives when They are discovering themselves.
