Well, this should come as no surprise.

If things continue as they are, this would only be a small obstacle for Linux and other alternatives.

I think, however, that Microsoft is just using as much marketing as they can to hold of Linux until Longhorn can come out. With .NET's browser apps, if they can just keep most of their current customers for the time being and transition them over to this, lock-in is assured.

Linux really needs a better graphics toolkit and GUI framework. Otherwise, people will be going with XAML a lot of the time. Hopefully something can be done about it. Hardware support is part of the problem, but the glitches in toolkits such as GTK+ and Mozilla XUL are also a big part of the problem. QT is crystal clear and lightning fast, but because of its licensing Sun isn't promoting a PLAF for QT. Too bad.

I think Trolltech should give serious consideration to the idea of putting QT under the LGPL. It would allow their platform to grow a lot, and they could start selling development tools and maybe extra controls instead.

In any case, Microsoft won't switch me, nor a lot of Linux devs over to Longhorn. I could see them making my job tough though.

When I do search in the first category, especially for things such as wallpaper, or simpsons audio clips, the sites that usually turn up are the least coherent ones with dozens of ads. I usually have to dig four or five pages to find a relevant one.

The people with these sites are playing hardball. Google wants them on their side, though, because they often display Google text ads.

Right now, my domain of choice is owned by a squatter that says "here are the results for your search" with a bunch of Google text ads. I was going to/may still put a site there that is very interesting, and the name was a key part of it.

I firmly believe that advertisements are the plague of the Internet. I would like to see sites selling their own products to fund themselves. Google doesn't really help in this regard. The text ads are less annoying than banner ads, but only slightly less annoying.

Don't get me wrong, I like Google. It's an invaluable tool when I'm doing research. I would just like to see them come out in full force against squatters.

There are a lot of people who don't seem to understand this. A buffer overflow usually happens when a person hacks into A LEGITIMATE RUNNING NETWORK PROGRAM THAT HAS A BUG. For example, a bug like this was just found in the CVS server. There are likely dozens of exploits like these that the general public doesn't even know about, that people are using to spy on other computer users. It is a serious security issue that can even plague the computer savvy.

On the other hand, if a person doesn't know the risks of running attachments and such, they may *choose* to execute a program, giving it full or user permissions. That program can do a lot of damage. If a person downloads and runs a full-blown executable from an untrusted source, they are out of luck.

In my opinion, this is the way things should be, and people should be smarter about downloading and running executables. Two more things: I would like to see Windows users running the majority of programs under user permissions (as is done under UNIX), and it would be wise for people to do regular backups.

Many longtime UNIX users I've met always thought Mac OS was the pinnacle of the graphical user interface. They didn't even claim to have a good GUI, just a working GUI.

I think to say that we should all switch over to UNIX GUI is preposterous. This is a very small minority. Most people admit UNIX GUI's suck. Things often associated with UNIX GUI's suckiness besides the terrible clipboard mechanism are ugly fonts, two-color GUI's (yes I still use one once in a while - Xfig), and poor keyboard navigation support.

They are not going to teach old-style UNIX stuff in any reasonable GUI class. Why? Because this stuff is a hack. The companies and individuals that really put effort into GUI's (conducted usability studies, read books, wrote books, etc.) are the ones we should model our GUI's after.

That said, for the most part I am happy with the GUI's on my Linux box. I just wish I could turn that damn middle-click off and use it for autoscroll, and have copying of text, images and other data work ubiquitously using C-x, C-v, C-z.

OTOH, if you're in a business where you get a huge direct payoff (such as a anti-virus organization) the result could be quite different. It will be important to make sure there is future revenue. In particular, if McAfee is planning on making a lot of money on spam filtering, the combination of SPF/Caller ID and Spamhaus's RBL efforts (said to catch 90% of spam by stopping 200 big spammers) may be something McAfee would like to prevent.

Did it ever occur to you that Microsoft may be pushing for this because because they have some outstanding computer scientists working for them that want a name for themselves? Merging with SPF sounds like a great idea. The proposals will be inter-twined, and neither company will have absolute control over it. It will make Microsoft look good. That's all.

And even if Microsoft doesn't merge with SPF, would this be a bad thing? Some of you with tin-foil hats might think so. But I think to say Microsoft will make the servers reject e-mail from non-Microsoft servers is a little extreme. What will happen is there will either be a standard that everyone can use, or there will be more than one thing and servers will have to implement all of them, in it's e-mail verification process.

It seems like a lot of people who post here are from Red Hat.

By the way, I don't support mass adoption of C#, I would like to see the OSS community make their own bytecode environment that is comparable to Java. I do think Mono is a fine platform for developing OSS/Free software, though.
