I'd check out the prices for the original 802.11g adapters for the Xbox 1... They work with the 360, are cheap on eBay, but don't have 802.11a (which I don't use myself, so it's no big deal to me).

Thanks for your great ideas. I've heard a lot of good things about Vancouver, but I think I'll save that for my first long weekend road trip once I arrive in Seattle. I also heard rave reviews about the Underground Tour, which might make a good first-thing-to-do-in-Seattle once I arrive with my friends. (I'll make a list about all the sites that you recommended visiting- it certainly sounds like you've had some good ideas).

I planned on going from Denver-ish to Portland-ish before swinging up to Seattle. I hadn't thought about visiting Crater Lake, but it's not much farther out of the way so I'll be sure to visit. I'm ecstatic about 101 North being the final leg of the trip!

Understood. I'm looking forward to getting away, but I'm also sensitive to being `geeky' enough to warrant a slashdot posting.

A private email brought up the possibility of checking email from computer stores- that was a possibility that I hadn't thought of. Internet cafes seem to be turning extinct, for better or worse. I feel that would be a good solution instead of purchasing a wireless Internet device.

Let me have one more shot- it seems like you're configured to a GUI interface (and judging by your first posting, it seems that's not what you're trying to do. ASCII or death for me too! :-)

Have you tried changing off IBM_Graphics in your defaults file? Or any other references to other settings?

And, of course, there's always the free nethack servers floating around on the net. If you can't get a local install working, then you can always create an account at http://nethack.devnull.net, or any other free site. This gives you the added benefit of being able to use other players' bones files, which can make the game much more interesting. Getting an ascension feels that much better too- the whole world can be a witness.

Just a guess, but are you running out of the correct directory? I *think* /usr/games/lib/nethack is the usual install directory, and if you're not there then change the nethack.rc file to say so.

I had a similar problem running out of a winzip window on a pc, then I realized my stupid mistake. :-)

  6. Ask for help then! on Nethack 3.4.0 · · Score: 2, Interesting

If you're having problems advancing, then don't try to tough it out alone- it's okay to ask for help. There are a host of people in the rec.games.roguelike.nethack (r.g.r.h) newsgroup who would love to help you!

I dare to call myself an experienced player, and honestly, many of my characters don't survive much longer than yours do. I have a piece of advice if you like: don't go into the Gnomish Mines so quickly! Wait till your level seven or eight, and even then, don't necessarily press your luck and visit any deeper than Minetown until your character has the equipment to do so.

The more you play, the more you'll gradually learn and you'll really start to appreciate the depth of nethack. I certainly haven't mastered everything there is to know, and I've been going on nethack binges for over four years now.

    Happy hacking!

I played with a few URLs, and here's my findings:

    www.ebay.com

links to http://www.qksrv.net/image-280514-220264, which has an instant redirect to pages.ebay.com. I played with this in netscape 6.2 and lynx, and they still directly put me towards www.ebay.com. There is definitely redirection occurring here.

    www.amazon.com

links to http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/home/home. html/104-9801158-34639, while netscape and lynx go similar (but not the same) page in the same sub-directory tree. I'm not sure if there's a url redirect occurring here.

    www.barnesandnoble.com

In IE, goes to http://service.bfast.com/bfast/serve?bfmid=2181&so urceid=21425507&categoryid=rn_home, then redirects towards a barnesandnoble.com redirected address. Netscape and lynx still go straight the low level barnesandnoble.com address. There is also definite, blatant redirection occurring here.

So, there you have it- out of just three simple checks, Morpheus went and screwed with two of them. I'm getting this crap off my machine and installing a better gnutella client.

  11. What the Almighty Metallica said... on Shut Down Metallica, Not Napster · · Score: 5

Napster said that they would block any user pirating MP3s on their system. They just needed a list. So this is what Metallica did. Stealing MP3s is illegal. Get over it. If you want to do it fine, but don't whine when you get caught or Napster blocks you. If CDs cost too much, don't buy them. Eventually the market will evolve where they are cheaper. But the bottom line is that it is theft, plain and simple. Argue it any way you want but it is still theft. It's their music to sell as they want for however much they want. That is a free market. If it costs too much buy someone elses music that is cheaper.

I was at Metallica's chat last night, and this was certainly the impression that they gave. According to them, the list was only to back Napster Inc, into a corner for not following their own Acceptable Usage Policy. The ``list'' was only done to put the legal ball back into Napster's court in an attempt to make them look bad.

They also went on to say that they're using their cult following and status as the Almighty Metallica to help new, upcoming bands continue to profit from the current economic guidelines that rose them to success. They say they're out to protect other bands who don't have the money to defend themselves, and they're out to protect their right to choose the distribution channels of their music.

One of the things that they were constantly slamming home was the fact that they have nothing against the mp3 format as a music medium. They say they are against Napster, Inc, from profiting $$$$$ from Metallica's music instead of Metallica earning the $$$$$ from their music. Napster Inc, according to them, is simply an IPO hungry company of leaches who seek giant profits off of musicians work.

That's what the Almighty Metallica is saying- while I'm a hardcore fan, I'm feeling torn whether to follow the band that has helped me grow stronger throughout my life, or to instead follow my own heart and say that what they're saying is bull#$%*. And, even as a platinum fan club member, I'm leaning towards the ``Metallica- you guys have changed'' feelings of my heart.

And that makes me hurt inside.

  12. lmnopf on College Pranks Go Commercial · · Score: 1

It's almost disturbing to see how much work went into the lmnopf prank, since at the end, there was no closure (no annoucement about what it was, atleast subliminaly), and yet some people thought that it was worth effort to do twelve thousand flyers, ballons, and needlessly spray painting the sidewalk on the way to campus from freshmen hill.

I'd hardly call that a `student mind' hack either- what rpi really needs is some quality hacks to put it on intellectual par with mit and caltech. It's not like there's anything to do here anyway...

By not having a PO box, then you're not paying your taxes, and thus aren't a law abiding citizen. Even homeless citizens without taxable income still need to submit the necessary paperwork to prove their exemptions....

  14. USPS is here to stay on Ask Slashdot: Is the United States Postal Service Obsolete? · · Score: 1

I find it unlikely that the Postal Service will ever be made "obsolete", even with the growing proliferation of email. It'll always be necessary for sending physical packages (co-existing with UPS, FedEX, and others), and it will continue to be the only *official* way to send legal documents from point A to point B.

Current law states that each citizen of the United States must be reachable by a mailbox. Until laws require ownership of an email account, then it'll continue to be a necessary way to send official documents.

And bulk advertising is kept to a minimum by it's astronomical costs through the medium... :-)
