  1. Oh, Penguin's got a history... on The Saga of Katie.com · · Score: 5, Interesting

Check out this link. This guy had to stop referring to an old software company he was involved with in order to not get sued. You might recognize the name of the old company.

Yup. That's top on my list. Gets me most of what I need.

  3. Re:Oh, simpler times... on Hamvention · · Score: 1

I'm a fairly new ham (licensed in '97 I think) and definitely agree that the emphasis on repairing or building radios has all but left the hobby with anybody younger than 40.

I also find that there are few elmers (a term hams use sort of like guru, it's the guy who helps you learn) around who are willing to teach me. Even if they could, I doubt I could work on most of the radios I own due to their small form factor (really, how do you fix anything on a VX-1R?).

I'm still trying to get my brain around CW, but I just can't make myself dedicate the time to learning it. That being said, I do help out with all the community service events I can, so there is some value to the community.

  4. Re:artists that do jewelry on Designing and Making Custom Wedding Bands? · · Score: 1

I had our rings made from family gold. I got two sets made (I like white gold and she likes yellow). The rings came out very nicely, and contain much more gold than a similar type ring would if made commercially. I say go for it. We had my parent's original wedding bands and our class rings melted down to make our wedding bands, and are very happy with the results. Each of my rings weighs almost 19 grams, which is nice because I don't have to worry so much about denting or bending while using tools.

  5. Re:JCL on Do You Remember Bob? · · Score: 1

There are bunches of mainframe installations which 'still' use JCL. State Farm, most insurance companies, a lot of financial companies; in general anybody who needs to deal with lots of data very quickly will probably use a mainframe.

Watching an NT box try to process 30 million records is funny.

  6. Not even PCI on PCI Modems and Linux? · · Score: 1

I've got a Fujitsu 765DX notebook. The modems are the same, or close, as far as know. The problem is that it's one of them there software modems, and so there's no way to get support for it under Linux (unless you feel like writing a driver?). Just go buy a PCMCIA modem. They work better anyway. The other problem I've had with this modem is that when I connect it to the wall with a long phone cord (~50 ft) it usually refuses to connect, and if it does it connects at 7200 baud. Nice eh? Oh yeah. They're also not rated for use outside the US, or at least that's what my manual says.
