St. Helens, OR is not far (about 20 minutes) from the Port of Portland. These agents were from Customs, which has an office near the port. The article sensationalizes the fact that these were DHS agents, which Customs is now part of. Nobody mentioned it was in anyway related to terrorism until/. got a hold of the story.
If you check out the toysmith group, they look like they are a distributor of a wide variety of toys, mostly cheap, chinese made ones, so yes, these probably were imported.
Mod parent up! I think this one poster has summarized the ACTUAL story, not the civil liberties, big-brother-is-watching story that this bad attempt at journalism by the/. editors would have you believe.
The AP story very clearly states :
"Virginia Kice, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said agents went to Pufferbelly based on a trademark infringement complaint filed in the agency's intellectual property rights center in Washington, D.C."
These agents, working for Customs enforcement, were doing there job as mandated by the law. Obviously there is a process in place within Customs to investigate intellectual property. If you don't think they should be doing that, then get involved and get the law changed, don't whine about the man trying to keep you down.
Of course the/. crowds sees DHS and they start jumping the gun about Anti-terrorism squads hunting down subversive Magic Cubes in violation of the PATRIOT Act.
Please try and apply some critical thinking skills here.
I see where your coming from, but I don't think that's the case. Reread the letter. It's basically a form letter saying it found one of those words in somepart of the website, but doesn't specify where. That's because more then likely they never looked at the context of the site, but relied on a bot search, and send out a form letter that covers all the bases.
No I'm sure he meant goldfish. I had a little feeder goldfish once from the carnival. Kept it in a little jar for 2 years. I got a new 30 gallon aquarium and figured he might like that better, so I dumped him in it. Within 30 days he was the size of my two fists.
Also keep in mind, most sports bars are only showing whats already being publicly broadcast ove rthe airwaves. They can turn on the tv and let anyone see that, however, if they made a video of it and replayed it later, then they would need the licensing angles covered
Because most legit bars get their feed from satellite or cable using a special business account that includes licensing fee's in the monthly cost's that specifically allows for this.
And yes, broadcasters do employ people whose job it is to perform audits on bars to make sure their licensing is legit.
So if I work in a convenience store and write down your debit card number and then sell that on the 'net for 20 bucks, I'm not stealing? After all, you still have your credit card.
What if I used your card number to buy something? Is it stealing then? How is taking something of tangible value from you different then taking something of tangible value from the movie studio?
This is true, but kudos to google for making the opt out during install very clear and easy to use. All you have to do is clear one clearly visible checkbox during the install.
Tigerdirect carries a few lines of whitebox rackmount servers. They are pretty cheap, starting at 699. You can get them with different configurations, including RAID using either SATA, IDE or SCSI
I bought a couple of midrange rackmounts from them for our citrix farm for infrastructure tasks (redundant of course1) and they have lasted just as well as our brand name multi Xeon boxes that that we run the apps on. This is in an environent where they are up 24/7 for the last 2 1/2 years.
What I find amazing is that that observatory sits on Johnson ridge 5 miles from the volcano, yet when it erupted the mudflow and debris shot through that valley and launched itself over that ridge like a kid going off a skateboard ramp.
A real poker room can force you to wear a specific brand of tie if you want to play in their club, they just choose not to.
The key point here is that this is a private business establishment, and the owner can establish limits on what goes on in that business. (with the exception of racial, gender, dicrimination, etc)
Courts have historically sided with the business owners in establishing what requirements the owner sets forth for participation in their service. Ever see a "no shoes, no shirt, no service." Sign? How about "we reserve the right to refuse service?"
If you don't like it, go play somewhere else, but don't come up with a make believe "legal" opinion that you'll try to sell us. The casino owner has no legal obligation to ensure that you "alternative lifestyle" OS works with his site.
Which one of your rights have been taken away?

Since when does less then 5% of the market count as a significant share?
Yes it does.
Hate to reply to my own post (damn preview button!), but I should mention you can also change this option at any time on the preference screen.

I for one welcome our future thought control overlords.
How is this cheaper? It says it cost 2873.75

Makes you wonder if the whole thing is some idiots idea of a really funny joke.
I had a mental picture of a bunch of guys sitting around in armani suits with dark stains growing down their pants leg.

So I take it you've never felt a sense of national pride when your nation's team wins at the Olympics?
Actually it's been overwhelmed off and on for the past week, well before Fark or /. picked up the story.
So?? My local news reported this story last weekend. Of course, my house is 30 miles from the Volcano, so there might be a little bias on their part.
What I find amazing is that that observatory sits on Johnson ridge 5 miles from the volcano, yet when it erupted the mudflow and debris shot through that valley and launched itself over that ridge like a kid going off a skateboard ramp.
About 3 hours. MSH is closer to taking out all those damn linux hippies out in beaverton, Oregon then it is Microsoft.
