Odd, I don't remeber talking to you? Hmm... If it makes you feel any better I don't like the people here either... Drop me a line, I'm curious if I have spoken to you...
FYI- Adaptec finally released a binary for that damn RAID controller. At least I (and everyone else) can recompile my kernel now.
I agree completely with this. I am aware of at least one major computer manufacturer that is using their clout to get Adaptec to open up their drivers for a RAID On Motherboard driver. I have a feeling this is going to be how things get done now. Take this following hypothetical. Company A sells machines with Company B's HW inside. Company B writes a driver, that will only be distributed as a binary (compatible with only a few kernels). Company A's customers demand the ability to tune their own OS (Linux for instance) and start telling Company A's sales staff that they will buy some other company's product if they don't open their drivers. Comapny A uses its leverage to get Company B to open their driver's under threat of finding a new (and more open source friendly) vendor. Volia, capitalism at work!!!
"If that doesn't scare you silly, go to your local library, and get a book called "the Crucible". I forgot who wrote it, but if you ask the librarian, they will certainly be able to find it for you." The author of that work is Arthur Miller. "The Crucible" is a play about the Salem witch trials and the abuse of the system to get even with those that the children had an axe to grind. When Miller wrote this play, it was an attack against McCarthyism and his blacklisting and "profiling" people as Communists. "Those who do not study the past are doomed to repeat it." M.
People will use what is right for their environment... Win2K will be used by those who have a significant MS investment... Solaris (on Sun HW) will be used by those needing a stable robust enterprise environment, and Linux will be used by those who have PC's that can't run Solaris X86 or are too short-sighted to realize not everything MS has done is a Bad Thing (TM)....
Whatever tool you don't have with you is the one he asks for. Just put them all in the thing your Aunt gave you.
