  1. Re:From the Office of His Imperial Majesty on ICANN Writes US Government Requesting Independence · · Score: 3, Interesting

it's not a good idea to arbitrarily remove the oversight that it currently has.

Okay, I'll bite. I've been hearing this argument for a while, but nobody mentions what form this oversight really takes. It also begs another question: How useful is this oversight? Can it do anything about the US government and the telcos working hand in hand to wiretap the shit out of the internet? Can it do anything about the telco lobbies who want to bend network neutrality to their own profitable ends?

If losing ICANN oversight is such a big deal, make your case. It seems like the internet's pretty much fucked either way, so how useful are they anyway?

Strawman. As I've said before, only 12-year olds and complete hippie loons want to abolish copyright. The rest of us just want something a little more in line with actual human timespans. And possibly different lengths of copyright on different types of IP. Software!=Books!=Movies, etc. Different obsolescence half-lives.

This is the misconception I'm talking about. It's like saying the girl was asking to get raped. There are fundamental problems with the system, and no amount of pepper spray is going to help.

Copyright in it's original form already does that: "gives us lots of free music". The only question is the timeframe and whether or not you are going to annoy your paying customers in the meantime.

Amen. And when that term is several human lifetimes, it is clearly benefiting only one entity: the corporations. The rest of you suckers don't get a look in.

Hell, various European nation student bodies have maintained significant political clout over the years... Why not ours?

Well, it's either one of two things:

    a) You are a nation of pussies.
    b) The powers that be have been slowly tipping the balance of power in their favour over the last 50 years, turning you helpless.

Option a) is the popular choice, but I'm firmly a believer of b). You're not asking for it, you're getting raped.
