Warren Buffet's decisions aren't only about what he likes. He only invests in products/companies/industries that he is able to understand. He did not understand Microsoft's business, so he did not invest in it, even though he is friends with Bill Gates. Doesn't really matter to him. He's got way more money than he could ever use.
I played that Dactyl game a long time ago. From what I remember, you could see the other guy's entire body, but if you looked down, all you saw was your left hand with the "gun" in it. It wasn't really a gun so much as it was a mushroom launcher. Damn thing took 5 seconds to reload too.
I need to crawl/archive a set of websites, can I use Heritrix?
Eventually. For now, the crawler is still in early development, and only if you are comfortable grabbing code directly from CVS, wrestling with incomplete documentation, and running into undocumented limitations, would you want to use the current software.
You know, I'd love something like that for my car. I'd just hop in the car, slide the ipod into a socket and press a button to play it.
I tried the TransPod with my 1st gen iPod, and well, it sounded like a spotty radio station. I just got one of those tape adapters and a cigarette lighter -> firewire adapter to power it. I can deal with the cables just fine and the audio quality is great.
Apple's legal team is usually only tapped to deal with sites that offer images as proof that the rumors are indeed true. Since there are no sites that have acquired photos of the mini iPod, there's not a whole lot they can do about it, freedom of speech and all.
I'd heard about Fluorescent Multilayer Discs years ago, but what's happened to them since? They were supposed to hold almost 20 times as much data as a 4.7GB DVD. So, where are they?
Not that I really want a new format or anything. I just think FMDs are cool. DVDs are a-ok for me, and I just bought a DVD burner (which supports all the damned various formats), so why are they making something new, again. Can we just have some media technology that lasts for more than 10 years?
SCO Bought Xenix (a UNIX system) from Microsoft at some point. So I imagine after that point, Microsoft no longer owned the copyright on that material.
What's with the various shades of gray in the interface? Doesn't that make it difficult for color blind folks to use the software?
Also, why are there [at least] 5 different locations one has to go to for various preferences. And why do some preferences show up in various preferences locations? Mouse and Printers appear in two different sections. Go take a look at Windows and Mac OS and notice that ALL of the preferences / control panels are located in ONE PLACE.
One last nit to pick. What's with the various styles of icons? Some are 3D-ish some are just plane 2D, etc. It looks like there were 4 or 5 different artists making icons for various preferences / apps, with no consistency in their styles. It looks like everything was just sorta tossed together.
I did the free trial for GameFly, and then a month of service... but I gave up. They only have a distribution center in California, and since I'm on the east coast, it took 3+ days for the games to make their way to me, and then back to GF. For me, it's simply cheaper to go to my local video store and rent games, and I'd get more games for the same price.
If they get a distribution center on the east coast, or at least within 2 days of me like Netflix is, then I'd reactivate my account immediately. In fact, I asked them to email me when/if they ever get that setup.
If you're nearer their distribution center than I am, try it out. It's just like Netflix, and my experience was just as good.
No, those features are NOT in addition to MySQL's feature set. MaxDB is a completely separate product from MySQL. All that MaxDB is, at least this version, is a rebranded SAPdb 7.5 with a MySQL proxy so you can connect to it with existing MySQL client software. It is NOT a combination of MySQL and SAPdb. Eventually, they will be merged, but this is just the first step.
I don't think MySQL had any transaction capabilities in 1999. Which is what SuperBanana was referring to, in a historical sense.
From InnoDB.com/news.html: "Innobase engine released in the MySQL-3.23.34a source distribution for Unix. Helsinki, March 12th, 2001"
The earliest mention of BDB tables in MySQL I could find on google was for 3.23.30, which was released sometime after Jan. 2nd, 2000 (the day 3.23.29 was released).
Also, people tend to compare PostgreSQL and MySQL because they are the two most popular open source DBMSs. It really doesn't seem to have anything to do with the technical merits of the products. Otherwise PostgreSQL would be compared to InterBase/Firebird and SAPdb / MaxDB.
MySQL has raw disk usage thanks to InnoDB. The only draw back is that it's slower than using regular InnoDB files in an actual filesystem... So, MySQL clearly doesn't have any advantage over PostgreSQL since it has raw disk support.
Looking for replication? Use the eRServer replication that comes with PostgreSQL now.

Mac OS X comes with all Macs. You only pay for major OS upgrades or for Mac OS X Server.

You can bet something was killed as a result of producing the solar panels. You can't escape it, life feeds on death.

I'd like to see you go startup the Oracle Web Browser project and see just how quickly you're nuts get roasted by their legal team.
