Well since his article points out that it took about 5000 years (from 3300 BC to 1900) for blacksmiths to go extict, I figure programmers still have about 4900 years left to go.

  3. Authors quoting themselves on The Extinction of the Programming Species · · Score: 1

Isn't it kind of lame for an author to quote themself from another work they did. This dude quotes his other book to define "fitscape" (in itself a thoroughly artificial word). Why not just put a definition in it rather than source out to his other work. It makes sense if it was some other author or some other word, but it just seems a little ego-stroking (or "fitsturbation" as it is known).

I remember building countless lega versions of the starfighter, complete with little doors and missiles for the "death blossom". Man that movie was awesome. Never figured out why they didn't use the "death blossom" on all the other starfighters or earlier in the fight. Must be the same principle that caused Voltron to save the Flaming Sword as the last weapon in every fight.

The key is aggregation. Plus there are public records and publicly available records. For example, credit headers are publicly available and were all over the place at my former employer.

Axciom collects these same records and puts them together into a usable database.

Note that this same problem exists in JSP, PHP, CGI or any other web prog system where stupid programmers build db queries as Strings. This isn't unique to ASP or M$ and pretty much every API has a way of programatically building queries and dml.

  10. Common practice on Consumer Database Company Hacked Again · · Score: 1

I worked at a large public records aggregator company that sold access over the internet and it was shocking how poorly secured the data was (possibly still is). There were many programmers who had copies of the db at home (each db included millions of SSNs, DOBs, etc). I hear they've cracked down and tried to make it more secure, but last time I checked it was still wide open.

Bah, it's not that the calendar is based on Jesus (so what). The funny part is that people think it is less Christian because they call it CE instead of AD. If the point is to secularize the calendar then make up some new time scale.

The humor behind CE/BCE replacing AD/BC is that the dating system is still Christ based. If you really want to secularize dates then you need to pick some new point in time. But I guess the wankers who decided that CE was somehow better than AD knew no one would go for their idea if people had to calculate what the real date is. I get a little chuckle whenever someone uses BCE/CE.
