"The downside is that some applications will not function correctly"
You mean like when we got new computers at work and found that VC++6(bleh) sometimes freezes when linking? That had us scared until I disabled the hyperthreading...
...one of these physics experiments (not necessarily this one) just vaporises the earth? Its not like they understand everything yet so how can they be sure its safe? Maybe it works just like they think it will or maybe they will create an artificial big-bang or something.
Simple: Performance. For any data that is of a fixed size you can't get faster than an array, now if you want to add and remove elements then you write yourself up a tree class... [Homer]mmmm tree class....[/Homer]
Some time ago I would have agreed with you, but not anymore, If media player crashes playing some video then the whole system becomes unstable and then even doing something like sending a file to the recyclebin freezes the UI...
But all that is up to the programmer, and are there languages where you can't try accessing an array at runtime with a subscript greater than the size of the array ?
Its all about money, why spend twice as much (or more) money to develop your product when your competitor wont and it will only increase your sales 5% ?
And there is no point bashing C again, yes it may be less forgiving of errors but any tool is only as good as who uses it. Paying more attention to the architecture and design of a program will eliminate 100 times as many bugs as changing the language.
They should pick out the significant stuff or things that introduced some new technology and get rid of the rest!
I don't go asking others to store all the stuff that I have around the house, if I want to recover some space then I sort through it and throw the useless stuff out... but that takes some effort so I don't do it very often, maybe they are as lazy as me?
Perhaps they have decided that its easier to just patent everything (since they will be given whatever ridiculous patent they want), which for them is an insignificant ammount of money anyway.
They can then:
1) Find some way of applying the patents, perhaps a lawsuit against some company which will not be able to afford fighting MS ( regardless of the validity of the lawsuit )
2) Prevent someone from suing them ?
3) ????
4) Umm they don't need any more do they ?
Yes this has the potential to add more vulnerabilities but provides a quicker response to the other ones.
What if a new worm emerges at midnight and starts wreaking havoc on servers around the world, who wants to get up in the middle of the night to go reboot a damn server and apply patches to it? Perhaps this could be turned on only when the administrator is not available..
At the very least it provides us with an additional option which is always a good thing IMO.
The worm is of alien origin!
When it realised how primitive the machiene it was running on (%WinDir%) it decided to commit scuicide!
Oh well, we will have to wait a bit longer to get in touch with those aliens...
Industry insiders say that the software for the phone continued to have 'fundamental problems,' leading to a high failure rate.
It initially had software security problems which Microsoft has claimed are patched.
But are those things REALLY bad from a marketing point of view? Everyone who uses MS products would feel right at home!
Logically you are buying: * A licence to view/listen to some copyrighted content * A piece of plastic that contains that content
Unfortunatelly the music/movie companies turn a blind eye to this distinction and if your piece of plastic breaks then you have to buy another one AND ANOTHER LICENSE ! But the license is like 80% of the price ! Thats like a car maker forcing you to buy a new car if the fuel pump breaks !!! Frankly it should be against the law but they own that so too bad for us consumers:(

...their whole "Stop people from moving to OSS" strategy we have seen lately ?
If they weren't scrared of loosing their market I doubt they would change anything.

Or am I just too damn paranoid?
Whats the world coming to ?

You want quality. Which of the other two are you willing to sacrifice?
:)
Get rid of both, I don't want them

More power == Less forgiving ? Sounds about right...

When AMD and Intel introduce DRM....

Well it would be too obvious that you don't like the owners of the site and you want it slashdotted...
Which is what would happen as EVERYONE would RTFA!
Or they would be able to find more to write about
:)
Sorry couldnt resist

How can all those mechanics put a Quantum in their title? Do they have to do a special course or something ?
