  1. now, what about this? on New EU IP Law Deemed Harmful · · Score: 5, Interesting

a hypothetical scenario: What if enough developers & scientists threaten to leave the EU? it has been said before that there are several countries denying this IP nonsense. now, if enough developers/scientists threaten to go, CEOs and politicians should start to think about it. without these people, no innovation would happen in the union. not that there's any chance that this might happen, of course.

The only thing that is difficult is that you have to keep up with the development of the kernel itself. Oh yeah? Do you expect a customer to keep up with the kernel development? I have an old WLAN card, I cant find any other driver than the one on the card's CD. And this one does not work - it does not compile, since several headers in the kernel CHANGED. Do you really expect everyone to KNOW how to rewrite the driver code? Is this user-friendly? Windows driver development may be difficult, but at least its way easier to install.

  3. That's one of Linux' main weaknesses on Migrating Device Drivers to the 2.6 Kernel · · Score: 1

Drivers are complicated in Linux. Oh, of course not if they are in the kernel, but prepare for the first drivers that have to be compiled. If you're lucky, all goes well. However, it is very likely that you'll run in version problems (devs like to change headers). Making device driver development more difficult is not really a bright idea, either.

i am still amazed by the starmap of this game. the scales are immense, yet this game, fitting in 1mb, spans an entiry GALAXY. of course, i know, the planets are generated and not stored etc. etc. yaddayadda. nevertheless it's impressive. the main developer, david braben, stated years ago that the planets move according to newtonian physics, and that most of the stars near earth are real & at their correct place. now I wonder: does something like a elite-style starmap exist? i mean, in 3d, with the galaxy forming a plane and the stars being points on this plane, each star with a specific distance from the plane.

I see a fairly large amount of comments about the rational usefulness of space travel, the cost/profit issue etc. But most of you guys forgot that the nr.1 reason for even thinking about space travel is its never-ending fascination. that's the main reason why there still are sci-fi movies and series. offer people a not-so-expensive space craft capable of flying them to the moon, or even to mars, in a reasonable time period (say, 1 week up to 1-2 months, in case of the moon lets calculate with 3 days). security wouldn't be 100%, however - and you tell them. i bet there would be a _hell of a lot_ of volunteers, even with the security issue. i can tell you, if i was given the choice whether to continue life as usual on earth, or to spend all money i have in order to enable myself the possibility to travel to the inner planets of the solar system, i'd be writing a cheque right now. i wonder if the time is right. i think it is. i see people becoming tired of the same everyday stuff. nothing to believe in, nothing worth even an effort. i guess this explains the huge interest in the recent mars missions. o.k., a diehard businessman would frag me for this posting, but i don't expect these kind of people to be the first ones exploring a new, unknown area.

What about the issue of original BSD code mixed within the Linux GPL kernel code? Does that mean SCO _has_ a chance of winning?
