  1. Re:His parents bought him a Dell Jukebox for xmas. on iTunes User Sues Apple Over Lock-In · · Score: 1

I agree, I thought my parents could handle this but I was wrong. I did in fact want the iPod. It is almost as if they should market the online store music as selling 'iPod music' much like a 'Playstation 2 game' or 'Xbox game'. It seems to be more clearly stated.

  3. His parents bought him a Dell Jukebox for xmas. on iTunes User Sues Apple Over Lock-In · · Score: 1

He might have had a scenario like mine. I have been ripping music to itunes and purchased a few albums using Apple's online store. I told my parents I wanted an iPod but instead they bought me a Dell Jukebox. They said they did it because Dell advertised that its *like* an iPod or they though it was an iPod. What they bought me was quite fine (a 20 gig unit), but I had them return it back to Dell, as I could not use it with my downloaded music and ripped cds (which I spent alot of time doing). They finally gave me money toward the iPod and I ordered it myself. As a consumer, to the average joe, this didn't make alot of sense and I still feel bad about it.

  4. is Ogg really better? on iPod May Not Have The Horsepower For Ogg [updated] · · Score: 1

a few months ago, I tried ripping some of my CDs to the ogg format, and noticed that through a song the bitrate would change throughout the song. I then noticed that I could hear the difference of this happening, and since the sound wasnt consistent, I decided I liked the other formats better (like Apple's ACC sounded better). Maybe its my PC, maybe its my sound card, maybe Im not ripping the .ogg files correctly, but I've found this to be the case. Until they can get the .ogg format to sound as good as ACC I won't use it. I do like the idea of a free and open format however.

Edna, I don't know but I would be happy that people are talking about space on any level. For all of us who grew up watching Star Wars and Star Trek, I think some sensationalistic psuedo-science has it merits in getting people interested about space. I don't know what would be more sensationalistic than finding aliens.

I think you can chalk this up to things you can't do on dialup. Corporate users will be on a LAN anyways. Why would you worry about dialup at this point in the grand scheme of things. There is alot you simply cannot do on dial up anymore.

  7. Re:Would people use them if they weren't Web-based on IBM To Announce Web-Based Desktop Apps · · Score: 1

Perhaps it uses the Suns Java Web Start as the model. If you ever used this it caches the java app locally to your machine and downloads once per update. This would be kinda cool as updates to the application would come from a central server.

Run Linux on non critical servers? I disagree with that statement. At my company we run our ecommerce site with Websphere and DB2 under Suse Linux. Thats pretty critical stuff that has to be highly available. I beleive you can run any server on Linux critical or non critical. The desktop is another story, we may be quite some years away from that. I wish Apple would plug OSX more :)

This is ironic but at my company who runs a medium sized ecommerce site every so often blasts emails that get blocked within our own company. We are filtering spam by the subject lines, so email with 'Free Shipping' or 'Big Savings' get blocked. It seems like a pretty weak solution to stop spam but its the best some of our network engineers can come up with on a low budget. I think the industry needs to be challenged for a new solution to replace conventional email.

After working with Linux on OS/390 (SLES 7)on my company's ZSeries mainframe is that you end up with 3 kinds of admins. Those who know the 390 side, those who know the Linux side, and some that know both. Knowing both operating systems is probably the toughest, however ultimately you can have Linux techs administering on mainframe hardware. Youll see fewer drive failures on the mainframe thats for sure and stop server sprawl. My company has a ton of vital legacy programs written on the 390 side of the fence while the Linux side is running large samba file shares, some apache webservers, and a few DB2 databases. All this said, this fall we are going live with a large scale ecommerce site using Websphere Commerce Suite 5.4 all under Linux on the mainframe (about 20,000 products online and many more skus). This is all replacing an always growing amount of server hardware that was NT4 based MS Siteserver Commerce Edition machines. This technology does have its merits!
