    Indeed, AMD64 might just be the best thing for them, it being so marketable so people have a more valid excuse to upgrade their Windows version. I doubt all the other features like the new GUI and Winfs would draw as much attention as being able to say it runs 64 bit.

    I think you're mostly thinking of Microsoft software.
    As far as I've read/heared the unixes were much quicker in using 32 bit software.
    Also, looking at how much is being done now for 64 bit in various open source projects the full 64 bit operating system including applications will be here sooner than expected.

    It's good you said appearantly, because I absolutely LOVE the interface of the Gimp.
    So, to counteract, dear Gimp developers, keep it the way it is.

    Actually, I find using Gimp much more pleasing on Windows than any other program because I use a lot of other programs, and I use virtual desktops as well.
    I absolutely hate having to run fullscreen when creating/editing a picture because it hides all other windows. With the Gimp I can at least keep one corner open for my messenger/command prompt/winamp/whatever I want to keep an eye on. The way it uses multiple windows is one of the reason why I started using this, and the last time I sat behind photoshop, I got really annoyed at the single window approach. Blah!
    I hope they'll never change this, or at least keep it an option in future versions.

    Same reason why I've reduced my habit of watching tv (mostly TMF/MTV). I've got so fed up with all the crap and commercials I turned off the tv and only turned it on to watch a movie if it's interesting enough.
    One of the biggest effects I've noticed is how much more relaxed and less dumbed down I felt after that. (although that has been kinda nullified by the amount of time I spent on /. now)

    So you rather have some junkie break into your house, grab your gun and then use it to kill other people?
    Restricting guns means less guns that can be used to kill. The real criminals will find a way to get one anyhow, but it will prevent the average Joe Blow freaking out and using one.
    Only in a society with levelheaded people that wouldn't be a big problem, and frankly, the US for instance isn't one of them. I don't even want everyone here in The Netherlands the right to bear arms.

    Although I do tend to get more violent after Windows on the server freaks out and doesn't do what I tell it to do than after playing Unreal.

    The K6 lacking a fpu? I've never heard of that before and it seems to me that you have a different problem.
    Anyway, you could try FreeBSD 4.10 RELEASE instead, I use it for my firewall as well on a 466 Celeron and it's stable and secure.

    That's the risk of putting betas/rc's on cd. I know those cd's will become obsolete soon enough. If I'm going to use those, I'll just put them on rewriteables so I can use them again for the next release.
    I'm waiting for the final release this time because rc1 wouldn't even install on this Dell C810. In the meantime it runs 4-stable like a dream. :-)

    Just checked the manual pages again, but I'm still missing the ifconfig functionality of changing the macaddress of a nic. I need this for the connection to my cablemodem, otherwise no dhcp address for me.
    I know about the sea.c patch for it, but I don't want to compile it for every upgrade. This is the only reason why I'm using FreeBSD for my firewall.

    In my case, I just looked at the hardware list of FreeBSD, found my soundcard, the read through the multimedia section of the (excellent) handbook. Had it up and running in no time.
    So I suggest you check harware lists before trying a distro. Could be that your card has no support, as I have with a Terratec of mine. (the only reason why that pc runs W2K)

    Active directory is something different than the user interface of the OS. That has to do with an application itself. Outlook is a very good mailclient, and I hope there will be similar open source clients soon, but for the moment it's not surprising the "zealots" use it.
    I must say I prefer KDE more than the rigid Windows interface.
    And the admintools are good for single tasks, but when it comes to changing settings for a whole bunch of users/pc's scripting is the way to go. If that wasn't possible we would've killed ourselves with our migration to AD.
