oops... that should have been under the above thread about size. I guess I clicked the wrong link.

  2. Re:"developers only"... on Sharp Ships New PDA Running Linux 2.4 · · Score: 1

I've got one sitting on my desk right now. With the keyboard slider closed, it's approx. 5" long and with the keyboard open approx. 7". It is a tad bit longer than most, but not by much, and the weight is comprable or better than a good number of the other PDA's I've seen.

  3. Re:GSM vs. TDMA vs. CDMA on SMS vs. E-mail? · · Score: 1

To be specific PCS is a term that refers to the 1900MHz wireless band, no matter the protocol used on that band. Sprint uses CDMA on the PCS band while AT&T amoung others use TDMA on the PCS band.

  4. Cybex SwitchView on Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM) Switches · · Score: 1

I use a Cybex SwitchView (4 port) every day at work and it has served me well. The only problem I've run into (and only a few times at that) is that the mouse doesn't always work properly after a switch (PS/2). That, however, is easily solved using one of the keyboard commands the unit recognizes.

Things are much better now that some of those annoying buttons are gone. (Well, all but the security info one, anyone know the resource name for that one?).

Now if there was only some way to make the buttons be on the same bar as the url entry...

  6. ident? on Ask Slashdot: IP Masquerading Drawbacks? · · Score: 1

This may be a simple question, but I haven't seen it addressed in any of the documentation I've read: What about IRC servers that require a valid ident response to connect? Everything works fine on my client machine except this (and incoming ICQ transfers, but I can live w/o that). Does anyone have any tips or pointers to documentation that covers this?

    Thanks.

  8. take the case off on How can you Safely Paint a Laptop? · · Score: 1

It may not be easy, but it is possible to remove almost the entire case (if not the whole thing) from a laptop. I don't reccomend it if you don't feel comfortable working with delicate parts, but in my experience the only terribly easy to break ones are the clips that hold the thing together.

Good luck if you try it, but I take no responsibility for this advice. :-) I've done a good bit of work on laptops, but I still don't feel 100% confident taking them apart.

  9. A note to Scoop and a link for everyone else... on A Bit About Freshmeat · · Score: 1
For all those who didn't get to see the new freshmeat, here is a page I happened to save while looking at the new layout (I was curious about how the tables worked).

Here is the email that I sent to Scoop. And to add to what I said in it, I hope all those that flamed him are forced to apologise for beeing so terribly rude.

    Scoop,

I wanted to let you know that I thought the new site kicked major ass. Not all of us out there are as rude as those who would flame someone who contributes his time, unpaid, to provide a service to the community. Freshemat was (is?) a resource that I found very useful, and appreciated very much, however, if you feel that removing the site is the right course of action, I support you 100 percent. I probably would have done the same thing. Maybe it'll be a kick in the pants that makes the linux community as a whole grow up a little.

Thanks for all your hard work,
