This has nothing to do with the number of apps, but, rather the number of useful apps. And seeing how Mac OS X won't be out till next year, none of the apps that can run on it are useful to *anyone* except the developers at the moment.
I think it's safe to say that there is very little useful software for Mac OS X... However, go to www.bebits.com and take a look at all the useful software for Be:-)
I never said I didn't care. I just asked someone to show me how I, an average nVidia customer, was harmed by this mistake. I don't think I was. Sure, Ralph was... But I wasn't!
Yes, it pisses me off that they used his code. However, Ralph and nVidia have come to an agreement, have they not? Ralph decided to act like an adult, not a raving lunatic like most people on this board.
As for your Microsoft analogy... Neither of the players in this situation were Microsoft... Neither of the players are even remotely as powerful as Microsoft. So your comparison isn't even remotely valid.
"Sometime soon, the kernel people really should say, 'As of version x.y.z, no more binary-only kernel modules will be permitted.' It's not like linux needs binary-only kernel modules any more. "
At which point I'll stop using Linux... I don't need some linux developer deciding what I can and can't use with the kernel. Thanks but no thanks.
This is between Ralph Metzler and nVidia. They have come to an agreement. They have decided on a course of action. If Mr. Metzler isn't happy with the outcome, it's his responsibility to take legal action. Everyone else should just mind their own business.
To which the author of the original code agreed... Frankly, this is b/w him and nVidia, not you. If you don't like their practices, don't use their cards, but please stop bitching about it.
My suggestion would be to e-mail the author(s) and ask:-)
I've been happily using the Grub for quite a while now... Just this past weekend I upgraded to the most recent version, which finally fixed the problem I was having loading an initial ramdisk.
Grub is the absolute best bootloader I've ever used...
It gives you a nice menu interface, if you desire... It doesn't require you to rerun with every new kernel... You can drop down to the grub command line and tell it to load a different kernel, either linux, hurd, or Open/Net/FreeBSD. It can load the initial ramdisk, and can chainload most other OSes...
Grub doesn't have to be run on new kernel images, understands ext2, ufs, fat, (iso9660?)... Can ls any directory, has file name completion, can boot FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Hurd, can chainload almost any other OS... No need to have an intelligent firmware either.
At some point though someone was going to persecute those two simply because no one goes through life without being persecuted. What were they going to do then, with no teacher or principal to protect them?
Putting aside the issues of legality when it comes to reproducing comments owned by a particular poster, doing so, without that poster's permission, is just plain rude and inconsiderate. Katz, CmdrTaco, and any others involved in the publication of this work, should be ashamed of themselves.
"Yes, doing it in the aftermath might have been nicer, though. Maybe I screwed up."
Well, at least you see my point... Your message would have just as easily gotten to the ears of the popele you haven't caught, and, at the same time, you would have come across more as someone who wants to resolve these issues, not escalate them:-)

Please prove that open source software is better than closed source software.
Adam
And where do you get off speaking for all Slashdotters? I for one do not feel that Nielsen speaks for me, and I am a slashdotter. Ergo, you are wrong.
Adam
Oooh... So we know that four other people agree with you... Four out of how many readers/moderators?
Adam
Hold the back button down till the history list pops up... Move down two selections and release.
Adam
Maybe you had so much problem getting Win95 working on your Multia because Win95 won't run on a Multia?
Adam
And I checked with my mother, also a lawyer, who says that, according to the license, you can distribute source code with your binaries.

Go get a life.

And even Matrox hasn't been completely forthcoming about all their cards...
Adam
"You are right, the whole community has not been harmed by this; just those with nVidia cards."
Please explain how I've been harmed...

You can't play Unreal with it, not because the drivers are closed source, but because there is no decent GL renderer for Unreal under Linux.

"No, the plaintiff must be an interested party. The law is, on that at least, quite clear."
Good, then please stop bitching about it... The author and nVidia have come to an agreement which, frankly, doesn't involve you.
Adam
"On their timetable it would seem."

If even the small ones were important enough to be included, then they were important enough to have permission and credit given.

And it never occured to you that you (and Slashdot) would be getting a good amount of publicity because of this? Oh, please....

I think the earlier poster meant "settle the situation" and wasn't taking about a legal settlement.
