  1. Sounds kind of familiar on States Threaten P2P Companies · · Score: 1
I love this. This is so common in other industries.

One major controversial one that comes to mind is gun makers. The government wants to hold the gun makers responsible for what idiots do with their guns. Once the gun has been sold, there is nothing the gun maker can do about it.

    Same here.

The p2p software makers are simply trying to put food on the table. Once they sell the software to an individual, they cannot control what the individual uses it for.

If you want an odd thought, think for a moment that the p2p companies would be allowed to exist, but get regulated like the gun makers - because their software is "dangerous to the general public" or whatever. Funny how once we let the gov't into an area of business (i.e. gun control), they want to control all of it _for our good_ (tm).

  2. What is Apache Geronimo - Answer -from Apache site on Geronimo 1.0 Milestone Build M1 Released · · Score: 5, Informative

ripped off of the Apache Geronimo Wiki:

    http://wiki.apache.org/geronimo

The Apache Software Foundation has initiated a project to develop an open source, Apache-licensed, implementation of the J2EE specification. In addition, the project is committed to certifying the implementation as J2EE compliant. This is an ambitious goal and will present a formidable challenge for the people involved, given the wide range of technologies covered by the specification. Apache Geronimo builds upon the many Java projects at the Apache Software Foundation. In addition, the project is bringing together members of the Castor, JBoss, MX4J and OpenEJB communities. We would like to extend an open invitation to everyone involved in the J2EE space, both commercial entities and talented individuals, to join the community and build a world-class J2EE implementation. The Apache Software Foundation is in a unique position to build a J2EE compliant platform. Our non-profit, charity status, and our relationship with Sun Microsystems, provides the foundation with access to the J2EE TCKs, making it possible to achieve certification. In addition, our flexible and unrestrictive licensing makes it possible for a wide variety of participants to assist in the development of Apache Geronimo, and to build their own solutions upon the platform. Apache Geronimo has been launched within the Apache Incubator.

  3. Re:Novell on SCO Expands Licensing Money Chase Worldwide · · Score: 2, Informative

And remember people, you if you pay the license fee, you are giving SCO the permission to mess with you. You are untouchable (until a verdict is reached in a US court of law) period if you are not a customer. IF you are a "customer", they will then do everything they can do to take advantage of you. And unfortunately at that point, they will have your specific name and address.... etc. I have often wondered what the implications were of getting a SCO 'license' (i.e. paying the modern day Billy the Kid) - remember they say binary use only. Therefore, would it be a problem to compile your own kernel under that agreement? How do you compile a kernel to use under a 'binary use only' agreement?

  4. Treatment for using SCO products on SCO Gives Notice To 6,000 Unix Licensees · · Score: 3, Insightful

Here is SCO's treatment of their customers. It is now painfully obvious that they do not have the interests of anyone in mind - they are being greedy and selfish. If for no other reason than that, they will ultimately fail. Once a person or entity gets the greed on, they become blind to reality and make some of the _dumbest decisions known to man_ (TM) Let anyone who thought about buying anything from SCO. You are licensing yourself for continual harrasment from SCO's gestapo. Caveat Emptor.
