    I'll keep my alarm that must be set each night if I desire to awake earlier than nature the next day.

    yeah, couldn't find how old they are but seriously, that kind of selection isn't even worth having a domain for. The only good reason for this is if that site is only a day old. And I kind of doubt that.

    You're right, the nine year old was a cheap shot. Still, the rest of it holds true. Or was calling me on the nine year old a warning shot, is all of it just hype? I think not.

    Not really. I'm freaked out by the way ALL governments have gone. I'm at the age where a draft would target me, but the only me they'll get on a battle field is a cold dead body. I'm more afraid of the rights that are being taken away as we speak. And it isn't just in the US either.

    well there's an interesting one. Is /. going to be fined or shutdown because they have the proven potential to attack the government? And what about the person who posted this, will they arrest them for using /. to attack that governement? Would RIAA sue a nine year old, how about an old lady? Would the US attack a country because they "might" have WMDs but leave another alone because the most likely do have WMDs? Give yourself one point for answering yes to any of the above.

    I honestly fear stupid people more. Maybe one of their suggestions should be that W be kept away from it (no pun intended). While we're at it, let's get him away from education, how can somebody with his intellect possibly be good for either?

    Wow. That's almost exactly what I did. I think the loss of VB6 is going to hurt businesses because of how powerful it is for RAD, especially in a business environment. But for programmers, it's only a starting point, support isn't terribly important.

    O yea, those are fun too. Great for all ages and the school can even create a team for a NASA sponsored FIRST Lego League.

    I got into SE at the end of grade school/begining of middle school. I kind of hate to say it but games are going to be one of the most interesting things that you can show them. That's why I went into the field, though not why I stayed. There is also a free game where the players use java to program virtual robots for combat. I can't remember the name but somebody else might find it and post a link. If you had some prebuilt robots for the kid where they could change them slightly with your help that might get them interested.

    I've got Linux installed on all my boxes. One desktop and my laptop also have a small windows partition. The laptop hasn't booted to windows in 48 days and the desktop hasn't booted to linux in 9 days. With the exception of the laptop (x86_64) i'm running x86 systems. No mac but many windows and linux variants. I do most of my work on the laptop in Linux with the desktop in windows right next to me. Hate windows but sometimes it's just faster.

    Not really.
    The slashdot effect is actually beneficial to BitTorrent. More people = better speeds for all. Maybe using the BitTorrent idea for websites wouldn't be such a bad idea. Wouldn't work for banking sites but hey, they aren't likely to be /.ed.

    How much does the degree, or lack of, mean? Can one get a first job without it? Advance without it? Is it much help after getting in the door? I'm wondering if four years head start on job experience isn't better than the degree these days.

    That sounds like a great approach to hiring. Do you know, or does anybody know, if this is a common practice. How many companies would interview and hire somebody who is selftaught and motivated but without a degree in anything? I'm at the point now where I debate not just what degree and college but whether or not to do it at all.

    Technology is growing and so are the jobs required to support that growth. In my case, on site services (repairs, training, installation, etc.) have allowed my company to double in size in six months and the prospects are looking good.
    Point being that while jobs may be cut in some parts of the industry (or outsourced) they are compensated for in other parts.

    programming will be out sourced.
    THEN companies will realize that they aren't getting the same results (China actually cost more and does less if you don't have a gun to their head).
    Programming will move back.
    EVERYTHING WILL EQUALIZE WITH TIME
    will you be around when it does?
    will you take advantage of patterns?
    i will
