Yeah, an Xserve would be just the thing. He could throw it in the rack with all his other stuff and be the boss. Most of yer hardcore audio guys already have a standard 19' EID rack with all of their stuff in it already, if not several.
...mainly to get GarageBand. I'm a bass player and I want to use it for practice when a "real" band is not available. If that goes well, I will probably upgrade to Logic Express the same way I am upgrading to Final Cut Express 2. How do the hard core Logic users feel about Apple controlling Logic so far?
Do you welcome your Apple overlords?;)
Yes, Panther was built with the GCC 3.3 "+" some poeple are calling it. The OS would speed up quite dramatically *if* Apple were to release G3/G4/G5 specific versions as the opts for the G5 if taken to the highest level would actually slow down or break things with a G4 or more likely a G3.
More likely they will break it down into chip specific libs and kibbles and bits and have the installer detect and choose. If they code for the middle ground I fear they will give up the best chance of having huge speed gains. They need those gains on the G5 to keep their momentum going.
About Maestro

You can also select driving destinations and points of interest where you want to take you own pictures. Make your own virtual experiments and set your Spirit soaring.
Is this available on other platforms? ( not a troll, I dont know )
I dont think circumstances are exactly the same, but your reply was intelligent and thought out well. You may be right, but last nights news that the iPod may get WMA will kill any headway MS can make against it. What would they use in the iPods place ? ? ?
Anyway, your response was well crafted, thanks.
Mr. Shmoe is th only poster I have read so far on this topic that
A: makes any sense at all.
B: gets the big picture.
it's all about payback time. Apple lost the battle last time around, and this time they are gonna make Microsoft eat shit. It's all about the player itself and the music store, not what damned format the music is in.
When the iPod plays wma files, any leverage MS had is gone. iPod will GAIN market share, not lose it. It's the op system war all over again, only Apple is fighting the battle smartly this time and using it's competition's strengths to add to it's own, on it's own terms.
I dont believe that. Too many poeple are being dragged into the mac fold by the likes of the iPod. I sold my G4 in 2000 becuase it was dog ass slow and never looked back until Apple came out with the G5.
Very happy with the change. I still have my PC but it gets used about 5% of the time now. Also the 10 years you mentioned, it did change - all in Wintels favor. In 1993 Apple was still a pretty major player on the desktop. 1996 was the year it started to tip over.
I dont buy it. If what you say is true, then the iPod would not be a runaway best seller - your stance is no matter what Apple does, they will be stuck at 5%, and I dont buy it. Apple could do the same thing on the desktop if their hardware is mind blowingly faster and cooler than PC's. People are ready for a change methinks - one blaster worm to many. We'll see.
if Longhorn is delayed longer than the early 2006 the best estimates have as of now;
If Apple & IBM make the Mac the fastest desktop during those years ( think dual core PPC980 based G6 @ starting >3.5 Ghz by this time in 2005 );
If Apple continues making OS X better at the same level and gets to true 64 bit-ness in time;
I think Apples market share will grow to 15~20% by the time Longhorn arrives.
A year ago, no one could even see Apple where it is now. They were universally dismissed as a cult and a joke. Now IMO they have the greatest mind share in computing right now, and it's only going to get better. HP decided to switch than fight the iPod, and if others get on that bandwagon, look out. Apple may actually win this time.
I'm not gonna buy it. BF 1942 / Desert Combat proved to me that a good multiplayer will stomp the best single player game around. No matter how good Carmack's programming is, it's still you against the machine.
Back in the Quake I days poeple were content with that but you cant replace the individual skillz match between 10,000 different human players and you with coding. BF1942 has got it all over Doom 3.It's not about how scary the monsters look anymore. Thats 1990's game thought.
Only when you make the monsters human by making them human controlled from all over the planet will Doom 3 be in the same league as BF1942.
FRB is right on the money. The BIG news in this is that it's a codec war now, AAC vs. WMA. Whoever wins the battle of the codecs wins supremacy of the music market for PC's and the things that plug into them for years.
Apple is ahead, and with more moves like this, will stay that way. Bill Gates shit his pants today. He just plain lost.
it seems Jobs has learned something from the operating system war of the late 80's/early 90's. Apple and Hp's stock both went up like crazy today.
The article I read directly said that the device would be made by Apple in reb-badged form which will be a *actual* iPod that simply has a HP logo on it.
In other words, it *is* a real iPod.
Yeah - I have Realplayer for OS X on my G5 here and it's just a *single* icon with the single app. No spyware, I think if remember no checkboxes during install, or maybe just one or two. And it didnt try to take over all my file associations, all it does is play Real content.
I couldnt believe the PC version - everything they say it is, and more. They should have just taken the OS X version and made that the Windows version too. It's the exact opposite experience.
it still leaves little.ram and.ra icons all over my desktop though. You would think they would move em to the trash after playing, but no.
Are those machines going to be able to do 64 bit computing 2 years from now, when everything is 64 bit on both Mac and Windows ( well, maybe Windows.:^D )
I have one of those homebrew Athlon 2500 systems. Nice Antec case with the bling bling window, vantec tornado HSF,
pretty blue fans, ATi 9500 Pro. It runs at 2366 Mhz on air, 100% stable. Then I got a dual 1.8 Ghz G5.
Ever since then, the PC gets used 5% of the time, and the G5 gets used the other 95%. I now use the the PC as a full time folding@home client so I get some use of it. The only thing I keep my PC around for is to play BF1942/Desert Combat, and I dont do that as much anymore either. I'm not 19 years old anymore and I can afford better.
right now, each folding@home client runs on each CPU of a dual CPU mac - becuase the client app isnt set up to take advantage of threading. I can see where Xgrid would give clusters of macs some huge folding advantages if a suitable client was coded. Instead of each segment taking 10 hours, you could do one in 1 hour given enough macs and move on to the next.
this opens up some some neato distributed client advantages for macs if the proper client software is written to use it. I think I'll go over to the folding forum and see if anyone else has this idea.
I dont agree. I think one of the prime reasons there are no virii for OS X is that until the release of the G5, Apple was considered a joke by the class of poeple who would most likely try their hand at it.
it would be UNCOOL in those circles to write a virus for OS X, until very recently.
The problem is damn few poeple actually have the balls to risk their family or their livelihood over it. It's sad, but thats USA circa 2004.
If you make those thoughts public, and they are radical enough or you percieved as someone who needs to be taken down becuase you threaten their gravy train, they will do so. And, they will use all aspects of the media and the public information system to do so.
America's greatest freedom has always been freedom of speech - but all of our personal freedoms have been eroded over the last 100 years becuase no one in power seriously considers the Bill of Rights to be enforceable today.

I think he overgeneralizes the articles points. A really useful article would have used some harder examples of politically and socially correctness. He steps around modern day issues....well, like he cant say anything about them.
My favorite example is why some African-Americans can & do use the term "nigger" to describe themselves without inpunity or shame, but if a white person does so, they can/will be fired and their lives ruined. Why is it a double standard, and it's a negative hateful word. Why do blacks in certain circles constantly use it?
(and there's no need to mod me down for *actually* saying things you cant say - if thats the case then/. is worthless.)
Maybe you should step away from the IM for a bit, and are you sure she feels the same way about it that you do?
Women are quite a bit less inclined to want to communicate through a device. They crave one on one personal interaction and I dont think going thru IM counts. Maybe you have a exception there, but I bet she misses curling up on the couch with you and talking about things.
When you get home and there's nothing left to talk about, I think it says you're spending too much time connected to each other. Smothering your wife is just as bad as ignoring her, I think. The trick is balancing everything.
Why dont you ask her tonight straight up if she misses those days where you would sit down and catch up with each other? Bet she will surprise you.
they almost sound like they've been in some type of self induced code bondage and Mr. Lincoln has just set them free.

He's right.
Cleared for takeoff, dude. Go for it.

One iPod to rule them all. :)

the biPod! seriously, great name! I wonder if Apple was as inventive as you are? We have but a few days to find out.
