I work for a major web-hosting company. I have been seeing several cases a day with the following two main problems: 1 - Mercantec PGP issues where SP2 changes the placement of quotes, changing strings for example: "c:\blah\blah\foo.exe" "%1" becomes: "c:\blah\blah\foo.exe "%1""
2 - Blocked ports.
Try walking a non-tech through changing a file-type association like that, or explaining that the reason they are receiving an error that states that their 'mail server is down or unavailable' is actually because an automatic update has suddenly changed some settings that they know nothing about.
The hardest thing is that the port-blocking seems to be random. I have not seen a pattern.
The file-association problem seems consistent.
I'm fairly indifferent. I have Debian, OpenBSD,and FreeBSD boxes for 'working' and utilities (music, general surfing, web-design), and an XP box for gaming, although I find myself console gaming more often.
I ran a pvc maze behind my desk, with the wires running through it to where it needs to go. the pvc can be painted with krylon fusion spraypaint. Works against ferrets, also. . . provided you get the diameter right.
For me in my last house, my computer workbench was between the height of my navel and sternum. high enough that I could see and reach into a case laid down on it's side without reaching too high, but low enough to reach the top back when a tower is standing.
I built it out of OSB, and found some non-static "rubber" mats to top it with. don't forget to run plenty of power receptacles (or mount a good power strip or two) and phone jack, maybe an rj-45 jack also if you have your home wired for a lan.
Also, you'll want to partition-off the pc section from the wood shop area. . . common sense stuff, but easily overlooked.
