You must be running testing, because if you were really running unstable you would have noticed that just a week ago there was a faulty package added to unstable (libpam) and it screwed up a ton of peoples machines and caused me more frustration then I've ever had with a system. If you were active on IRC at all you probably saw all the complaints. Also I believe unstable currently has a few other minor issues with KDE and some others, not sure but thats what I heard, I run testing and stable only now, along with Fedora. In the past three years I've tried Mandrake, Suse, Debian, and Red Hat. I've ditched the first two, and Debian and Red Hat are the only ones worth anything. Debian has recently gone down hill though, and even unstable isn't as up to date as it could/should be. I'm phasing out Debian now and after years of testing various distributions I've settled on Red Hat/Fedora. You must just be incompetent or made a mistake somewhere, but I can assure you that it was not Fedora, especially if you were running a stable version and not testing. Regards, Steve
SELinux may be a bit too secure and/or complicated for those not familiar with it. By introducing it as an option, those who know about it and/or are willing to mingle with it can. I mean its possible to lock yourself out of your system even if you have root access, itd take quite a bit of rebooting(probably into knoppix) or reinstalling the system to get access to your system if you messed anything up. I can't comment on the stability of the SE patches but I would assume they are stable conidering that the NSA put them together, but if they aren't stable it may be causing trouble as well. Regards, Steve P.S. If any of you are trying out fedora and prefer the ReiserFS file system just pass reiserfs to the kernel at boot. For those who don't know, ReiserFS is a journaling file system that is very stable, very fast, and has the best recovery that I've seen yet. It is also funded by DARPA as well as a few other secret donators.
Is Red Hat out of the question? If you already have Suse licenses then go for it, but my experience with red hat servers has been great and their support is even better. They've really got their stuff together as far as servers go. Regards, Steve

Yea that must be why they release a ton of things for free, including their very own opensource server AOL runs a linux shop and they even have an AIM linux client. They just dont have the main aol software for linux simply because there isnt a market for it. If you still don't believe that AOL doesnt support open source software, instant message ZolaOnAOL, AOL's IM Bot, and ask her what the greatest operating system in the world is. There are a million other ways that AOL supports OS software including Mozilla. Just open your eyes and be thankful that we have companies like AOL. They may wind up being a push behind a major migration to Linux simply because they are good at making things super easy. Just wait and you'll see. Regards, Steve
Well that test proved that time is warped, this test is to test frame dragging, which I guess in simple terms is testing to see if the space/gravity/time is spun around like a tornado or whirlpool, except the visual those two things give is somewhat inaccurate. Frame dragging involves too many dimensions for most to visualize it, but hopefully you get the idea.
IIRC Microsoft takes a ton of shortcuts to get that additional speed. For instance, their trig functions are a number of decimals less accurate. If your going to use a closed compiler for windows use Intel's, it probably produces the best code for x86. Intel has submitted lots of things to the GCC crew which has been rejected. The GCC devs are very picky about what they let in and try not to favor any one OS or platform. Anyway, speed isnt a major thing to worry about anymore for devs unless your doing high precision or speed related stuff. Regards, Steve
Actually most printers claim resolutions that they can't physically achieve. They typically use software to encode the image in such a way that the human eye interprets it as being many times the resolution of what it actually is. I've dealt with various software and code that is used in such applications. And also something that noone seems to be taking into account is that dots that are very close together will blend, even if its just slightly. You would need very very highly refined paper to achieve what people here are talking about, unless you used really good error detection. Its a cool idea anyway and there are companies that do this, unfortunately I can't recall the name of the one company that I know does this, and can encrypt it too. Regards, Steve
Yes but personally I don't want some dumb employee of the movie theatre or some cop spying on me and my girlfriend during a movie. When I buy that ticket, a certain level of privacy is expected, they should at least have a sign or something letting you know. I'm not saying that we make out during the whole thing, but its common knowledge that couples will kiss every now and then during movies, and I dont need some guy getting off to it. If I ever see someone in a theatre with night vision, I'll walk right up him and stand in front of him. Time to put on that damn tinfoil hat again, and now I've gotta boycott two organizations:) I never had and never intend to pirate a movie, but I probably spend at least $75 a month at the movies, I dont want to be treated like a criminal.
-Steve
Just encrpyt all your emails, they'll have a great profile of random bits:). And they said they'll probably let you use outside clients for free so it makes it even easier to encrypt, no biggy.

No, Microsoft's policy is that their PC Manufacturers cant sell a computer without an OS. Implying that the only OS that people would want is MS's, if they did what you said, well then they'd have been in court years ago...or wait..they were..but not for this exactly:) Thats why Dell ships some computers with FreeDOS, so they dont break their agreement with Microsoft. Regards, Steve
Just out of curiosity, how many of you ClamAV users give back to them with either money and/or some sort of service? Keeping such an up to date database is a full time job, is the communtiy supporting them well enough? Regards, Steve
It is blatantly false that only Microsoft finds exploits. The SAMBA team found nemerous security vulnerabilities with the way Microsoft implemented their protocol and then reported them to Microsoft. Hackers could easily have abused such cases, but instead Microsoft got lucky and they were white hats that found them. There are many other cases, most exploits are found by security firms of some sort and then Microsoft will acknowledge them for one sentence in the fine print at the bottom of the notice. Well I could go on but I'll let the other slashdotters do that for me. Regards, Steve
Well with the current state of affairs, trojan wirters/ virus writers/worm writers all need to write special code if they want to shutdown/bypass AV software cause its so varied. If everyone uses MS's AV software then that makes the virus writing that much easier. And if an exploit is found in MS's AV then the whole world of Microsoft will be immediately in danger unless they are running a 3rd party AV.This is in no way good especially considering MS's track record. In a worst case scenario prepare to see a new wave of next generation self morphing viruses not detectable by crap signatures. Regards, Steve
I've thought long and hard on this topic and yes on windows it is accurately called the recycle bin because you dont get rid of the junk you put in there, it gets reused in some other part of your system. You put junk in, the junk is modified into other junk and then sent back to create new system dlls. In linux(and I believe macs) it is accurately called the trash can because what we put in there is thrown out for good, we don't have our junk recycled to create more, but different, junk:) Regards, Steve
What servers are enabled by default on your Linux machine that face a pulbic interface that you didn't explicitly state to be on there? And while installing Linux, you were most likely prompted or informed to set up your firewall. Windows has never asked me to set up a firewall. Did these "hacked" linux machines in the survey have any firewalls running? Or were they patched with SE Linux? Most likely not or the Linux numbers would have plummeted. I have full control of my linux boxen, my windows boxen have full control over me and I just try to bend around whats there. Regards, Steve
Are you serious? Belgian's population is only 10 million people. I dont have time to google it, but if your right is that even considered a country? I'm not trolling or anything, and perhaps my views are distorted from living in the U.S. my whole life, but New York City has 9 million people and thats not even the whole state. Well I think this whole switch has more to do with naming issues and marketing rather then providing whats best for the customer. Afterall, Yahoo! used to have commercials all the time saying "Do you Yahoo!?" however noone started saying, "Oh I don't know this, I'll go yahoo for it". But people all the time say I'll google for it, and I've never seen a google commercial. If they continue using google then there attempts at getting people to make yahoo a verb are pointless. Either way Yahoo isn't all that great and never was. Regards, Steve
Anyone know if MyDoom's protocol for port 3127 is documented anywhere? If the virus writer can send it patches, then surely we can too:) We could have this mess cleaned up in a few days if we made the patch clean the machines. Not sure if cleaning people's machines without their permission is illegal, but itd sure make a lot of people grateful. If anyone does do it make sure to sign it as a gift from the opensource community so we look really good instead of the evil people that we've been made to be. Regards, Steve
Mark Twain once said, "Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." Fortunately in your case you posted as AC:) The Universe is expanding at the speed of light and has been, although during the initial bang its expansion was several degrees higher then that of the speed of light (and no that doesn't break any laws because no data was communicated and yes its slightly more compilcated then that but you can google it yourself). The Universe is esitmated to be about 15 billion years old, and believe it or not its estimated to be slightly over 15 billion light years in length. So actually its average rate of expansion is slightly greater then the speed of light. Regards, Steve P.S. Okay now everyone can quote Mark Twain and point out something that I overlooked, but in general the above statement always holds true.
Well actually knowledge of its existence and how much of it exists will determine whether or not the Universe eventually implodes on itself in the "Big Crunch" or whether the universe will keep expanding at the speed of light forever. So technically speaking, "in the long run" it will matter quite a bit:) Regards, Steve
