I heard somewhere that the pieces were moulded on the spot. Maybe it was hype, who knows.

  3. kind of funny about the mods of articles on Digging Holes in Google · · Score: 1

anyone who mentions the fact that one can use more than one word to describe what they are searching for gets modded up. Although I don't think that anyone who reads /. is unaware of that fact. But there are over 500 messages by now so it's too late.

Google should have one little line above the edit box saying "Use More Than One Word To Describe What You Are Looking For To Get Better Results".

Imagine going to the librarian and saying "Apple", what will you get? most likely another question to specify what you want, or if you are hungry but if not then you would probably get the same type of results as google, less the computer and commercial bias.

I agree with you, although it's not just walking. Stop being lazy, stand up instead of sitting down when you have a choice, get up and do things yourself, go to the store for whoever you're with. Being an active person makes a huge difference, I lost 50 pounds of computer weight just by deciding to not try to be as comfortable as possible in any situation, but to use every amount of energy that I have to do every little thing I do as best as possible. This has not only led me to lose more wight but has made me more aware of my surroundings, my thoughts are clearer, I have more will power... and I have an easier time with women :P

  6. Re:heh on Windows Vulnerabilities Revealed, Patched · · Score: 1

well it also has to do with speed, drivers run with the kernel, hense the system account, not as separate processes so that the overhead of process switching and security checking doesn't slow the system down. This is an extreme simplification of the case but... the next level that has to be secured and this level has to get it's bugs fixed.

It should be more difficult for processes to install or modify drivers, but this won't stop the processes that run system functions with bugs so that any old code can be run under the system process, you've heard of one type of bug I'm sure, buffer underruns...

If there was a vote for a hardware security verification upon changing signed code that is run by the system account or letting the system account run any code that is not signed, then I vote YES, and welcome everyone to the era of signed code hacks if yes actually wins :P

  7. parallel watcher network on Intrusion Tolerance - Security's Next Big Thing? · · Score: 1

one idea would be to have a parallel network watching all network activity and processes but with no actual way to communicate with the watcher network itself other than a physically secure terminal... this of course would lead to other watcher network layerss all the way on up to one point. I know it's not very logical and I can think of a ton of holes in this idea but who knows, a better idea could come from this. sig, with fries... please

  9. Re:Still more geniuses with children on Marriage May Tame Genius · · Score: 1

while I agree with your rant on the parent, I read the parent with a grain (box) of salt... The truth is that it works both ways, the women who have been in situations where they can advance in science or geekdom were probably not in situations where their attention was taken away by relationships, children or whatever. Whether it "should" be men or women that do the job is irrelevant, there is a certain percentage of males and females that are capable of being geniuses and there is a certain type of person that those geniuses can be with so as not to be distracted... if that means no relationship at all, or hiring a housecleaner and 24hour babysitter so that both can be geniusses then the view of the importance of social togetherness between 2 lovers will have to be re-defined... ever read Brave New World? But I think humanity will stay diverse enough so that priorities will let people find each other and resolve these issues. Only because of force has history shown that men have dominated in the roles of the sexes... But let's hope that women will not try to replace men for revenge, but so that both learn to understand that there is a new way that people have to be that is above both how women and men were. anyways, whatever....

  13. Telephones on The Next Step in Fighting Spam: Greylisting · · Score: 1

Well maybe I'm wrong but it would be nice if there was a subscription based email system done by a large company or even the government, then we could be guaranteed that the person that is sending to us is not trying to hide themselves and could be accessible for prosecution just like telephone spamming.

But of course this opens up a whole new slew of privacy arguments... but, for that I would say that this is one place where I would not mind. It's done good for my phone anyways, I haven't gotten any salespeople callong fo a long while now.

  14. I say increase the lowest common denominator on Putting the TV Broadcast Spectrum to Better Use? · · Score: 1

I agree with the top post. But one can say that at least most people that cannot afford cable have colour TVs, so the question is what is next... Maybe when MPEG4 becomes standard and cheap hardware exists then oblige broadcasting in that format and those with enough money to buy a cheap converter will be able to access it, and I imagine that it would become standard within any new TVs from the bottom end all the way up with time... not much either, how much silicon does it take to decode MPEG4 now? I doubt its much at all, imagine in a few years.
