This right here scares me. I suppose I could try to be 'William Forrester' and never leave my home, paying for people to bring all my 'needs' to me. However, real life dictates that I must leave my home and go out into 'public' to lead a somewhat civilized life.

So if someone takes a picture of me out in public, are you saying that they can do anything they want with that photo of me without my consent?

Absolutely! I ocassionally Follow the /. ABOUT link up to see where the Corporation resides (at least for tax purposes). But as I understand it, the /. community had very non-corporate originations.

Even someone with a well above average talent can get deeply screwed from this type of path.

Here is an idea, continue this thread by pointing out some great places to get an education that won't lead one wrong if one has the talent... help steer those who are trying to make a higher-education decision today!

This is the type of thing I have been contemplating for years but haven't had the time to implement to my full desires. Maybe some of us here on /. can pool our resources...

Everything Z80 has mentioned, I have experience with, but I think that all of it needs to be taken to the next level and combined to really be of use for this sort of thing. Both more than one sound card and VNC is overkill for this applications, IMHO. I believe that some of the more basic concepts behind these need to be combined with other concepts for a full featured system.

I actually have a system with _some_ of these features in my house, but it isn't as easy to switch between souces as I would like it to be. I can play audio an video (DVD, MP3, VHS, Cable, CD, Radio, etc.) from different sources in different parts of my house to all other parts of my house. I audibly compress the sources so that the commercials and other LOUD sources don't blow my ears. Plus I can control the content in each room from within each room. But it takes a little leg-work to switch the source depending on what I am switching to and from where. I would like to make this much easier and multi-facetted as Z80 is looking to do, but have more important things to do than spend _all_ my time on this project...

    I have some basic requirements:

    • Control from any room.
    • Low overall cost for minimum multiroom functionality, but more money payed will give greater system capabilities.
    • one server able to serve each and every room with different content (video and/or audio).
    • total control from any room unless someone is in one of the other rooms. This lets you control the whole "castle" if you are the only one home, yet not interfere with someone elses' entertainment if you didn't know they were home...
    • built in such a way that it will work *no_matter* what companies live or die. In other words, open and/or standardized formats.
    • robust and electrically seperate from internet for security reasons, but able to connect to the internet so that content from the internet can be fully enjoyed.
    • Ability to plug any of the modern devices into any room to be *connected* to all sources. Let's see: laptop, palm device, IPod, active surround music and/or video system, etc.
    • very Low power consumption when powered off.
I see the data cables (wishfully optics) to have a standard protocol with an upgradable interface in every room that converts to all other current formats.

We must constantly realize that all things we enjoy today were only once imagined.

I could go on and on, but I look to the /. community to blow my mind!

  8. Major Artists Respond Out Of Fear... on Artists Protesting Single-Song Downloads · · Score: 2, Insightful
Major Artists respond out of fear because generally they are making a good and many times wealthy living on the "old" model of the music business. The more people hear them the more likely they go to the concerts where the real money is made. They are all used to the model -- is has worked for them for decades. It would be easier for artists and the major labels to just keep using that model. The problem is that their customers want a different model. They just don't know how to give us what we want while not loosing the bank. WE NEED TO LET THE ARTISTS KNOW THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THEM!

As for the big monoplies who CONTROL what we hear on the airwaves, I don't really care what happens to them (Thank the maker for the WWW giving us options, and music stores that let us listen before we buy). But that is probably an attitude that is causing many problems. I hear and see mostly animosity toward the industry from the consumer side. Does anyone know of a "music lovers" group that is voicing the opinions and NEEDS of the consumer to the artists and labels in a welcoming way???

Like many, I think that the future model includes the full length album. The truely creative artists take us on a trip through musical wonderland with albums of music by NOT taking the cookie cutter approach to trying to write "hit songs" on every track. For music lovers, that is a great thing...

But many people have different music tastes where they only like one or two songs on each album. They probably won't pay $12 for the whole album, but would pay the $2 for the two songs they like. I don't buy music this way but I see others that do. Aren't having both options open to consumers going to make more money for the artists and labels?

    Axigrav

P.S. My fear: POP music already has little variation from hit song to hit song within each music genre (I know, I know -- with 11 notes and octaves how many possibilities are there...). If they end up thinking that they have to taylor to selling on a single song basis there could be even less variation from song to song and artist to artist. That would be boring!

No, I am not familiar with the SIN or Aracronox issues. Please inform me.

From a mediocre hardware and software designers' , and users' point of view , I agree with the challenges and issues you are talking about. And because of this, I am tempted to put you on my friends list.

Everything I typed was from my personal experience -- I made no assumtions of anyone elses' experiences, neither was I dogging the company or the games -- not that you said otherwise.

For arguments sake, we assume here that nothing is wrong with the hardware/software/drivers with the system in question:

To me, the quirky hardware/OS configuration argument sounds like a bad excuse for not doing the proper homework before programming or writing hardware/software requirements. From a consumer's point of view, for the PC there are 2 big processor companies, a few big video chip companies, a few big interface chip companies, and a number of companies that put all that stuff together. I believe that I have the right to be upset if I have standard hardware and OS (as listed in the manual), the software has been out for a while, and it doesn't work for me even after installing all the updates. If the software isn't ported for specific hardware I expect the manual or READ.ME to say so. Yes, reading everything in the package I have purchased is due diligence (including web links). That is the point here. I know that everyone is on a short schedule and everything (hardware & software) changes constantly. Keeping the intelligent and loyal customers up-to-date is argueably an extremely important thing.

There is also the argument for complete testing -- with all the people willing to test alpha software, it shouldn't be too hard to have software tested on multiple configurations and documented SOMEWHERE as such.

OR, maybe someone having issues is just the results of the software manufacturer playing the odds by listing min system requirements instead of what the software was tested on. Most likely it will work for most people. If a company pisses off 10% of the people that try their software but sell 200% more of their software because they only list min requirements, they still make out much better. No, I am not anti-capitalist, and no I am not pointing out any specific companies.

But then I am just rambling because I am enjoying waxing rhapsodic. I was originally just trying to open up a conversation about the quality we can expect from the mods. I expect good things. What do you expect from the mods?

    >The vast majority of people haven't had any problems with them

I would like to dissagree with that but I can't because it is hard for either of us to prove how many people have had problems and just gave up without telling anyone. I don't remember all the problems I was having or how I got them working -- sorry I can't define "buggy" any better. But when I finally got things to the point were I could really play the HL games, I had other games I was more interested in spending time on, which also hadn't been difficult to get to a usable state.

Guess I am just the type of person who expects that if I spend $50 on software and I have met all the hardware/software requirements on the package and in the manual that I shouldn't have to spend several nights sifting through user groups and manipulating config files to get things to be usable. In my opinion, I should only be doing those activities if I want to enhance the game somehow, not make it work.

On the other hand, when I download free software or free user mods, I expect that to be time consuming and not well tested.

Quake II seemed pretty good. UT was a joy to install, run, and play. I bought the HalfLife set and everything but the main Halflife game was buggie for me on two different systems (with all the updates). Maybe that has to do with the fact that they started out as user mods???? That really bummed me out because the teamwork game play seemed like the next logical advance in my gaming experiences (CTF can be fun when you get teamwork, but that is rare...Bombing Run improved on that a little).

UT2K3 has been great for me since the first patch.
