They can probably justify it, but I won't pay it. If they beat the iPad by $100 or included the keyboard at the same price, maybe.

This white box has already produced great results. My crappy Internet connection improved 2 days after I was informed via email from Sam Knows that my ISP (Cox Communications) had been informed that I was participating in the trial. AWESOME! It's been running great for two months hence. That's been worth the price of admission already.

So I have questions for you paranoid freaks. What makes you think your off-the-shelf POS router doesn't already include government spyware? Oh, right, because you immediately flashed the firmware and installed dd-wrt. And you don't think that government scriptgrammers with unmentionable agencies haven't already checked in code to the latest development build? And while you're reading through the source code trying to find unmentionable hard-coded IP addresses pointing to servers running in data centers that don't exist, don't you think the warm silicon slamming bits through your router has the very logic you are searching for burned within?

    Boo! Don't look behind you.

As if the Microsoft monopoly wasn't bad enough in the 90's, now we get a modern-day Apple one that makes Microsoft pale in comparison. As Apple gains market share (and they are), this type of attitude is 180 degrees away from where development should be heading.

If a white hat doesn't, a black hat will. I'd rather find out from someone who'll share the vulnerability rather than exploit it.

When these algorithms are created, they often represent a time tradeoff, the time to hash/encrypt versus the time to compare the hash/decrypt. These guys are just sharing with the world its time to move on to another algorithm. Although I agree it would be nice to find an algorithm that is guaranteed never to be weak!

  8. Concerns Overblown on Walmart to Push RFID · · Score: 1

Wal-Mart has already announced publicly that they WILL disable the RFID at the point of sale. They are the first retailer to announce their intentions as supporting the majority view among consumers and ./'ers. Whether by good leadership from within or good pressure externally, Wal-Mart is making the right choice when it comes to RFID's.

FYI - several posts have mentioned a problem at the security gates on the way out. Sorry! Each tag has a unique identifier, so a retailer can flag an item as being sold. Upon connecting the security system to the sales data, purchased items would be filtered so as not to go into alarm. This would actually be better than the current market situation where you can walk out of a retailer and into another only to set off the alarm on entry because you just bought a book with a still active security sensor (different retailers have different sensitivities on their equipment).
