My ultimate point is that I think there should be more public assertions by scientists of scientific uncertainty (especially in the non-hard fields of study). But who -- especially if you're an expert in your field -- wants to be perceived as not knowing what you're talking about?
Maybe, though, the real problem is with journalists, textbook authors and University press offices.
I do not think that Science is like Religion. Like I said, this article is a Good Thing. The only reason that the West has advanced stupendously in knowledge and (besides Capitalism) wealth is Science.
However, you can't deny that scientists are imperfect and sometimes act that way. (Well, you *can*, but then you're deluding yourself.)
In order to overcome growing public growing, rationalists must be like Avis and "Try Harder" at being humble and not so dogmatic.
Penn Jillette is who I admire, not Richard Dawkins.
I'm truly glad that some paleontologists aren't accepting received wisdom, but scientists affirm as Truth (dinosaurs evolved into reptiles, dinosaurs are all green, caffeine is bad for you, "too much" salt causes strokes, cyclamates and saccharin cause cancer, the continents are unchanging, you must drink 8x8oz of *water* per day, etc, etc) topics with the barest research behind them, doing their best to banish those who disagree with Orthodoxy.
In that case, why not believe in the same unchanging orthodoxy that your family, friends and coworkers do instead of one that keeps on changing.
And since when has humanity possessed any respect for life?
It's situational: civilization doesn't progress far w/o "local" respect for human life, and some disrespect for "foreign" human life is partly good at unifying the tribe.
I have a lot less respect for the rich and powerful who get their politician underlings to order the invasion of a country so they can secure oil and make big profits
I had to be Fair And Balanced (no, I don't watch FNC) as a sop to left wing America-hating pansies who blindly deny that there are groups of people in the world more Eeeevil that the US Military.
Who is the sensible person? We Westerners really think that we are sensible, and that those Ay-rabs are bat shit crazy, but Mohamed Atta thought it was imminently sensible to fly a plane into the WTC, and there's nothing we can so or say that will convince millions of Muslims otherwise.
Senseless? Few people kill just for the fuck of it.
Now, whether you agree with a US soldier's rationale for killing a 12yo boy or an Al-Qaeda follower planting an IED that kills whoever detonates it is a different story, but they all have a definite rationale.
Besides the standard parental "You'll hurt your ears!", the main reason is that it's been obvious to me since they became popular that constant ear bud usage is antisocial, and as long as I have control over my kids, I'll do everything I can to prevent it (even if that means listening to music I can't stand being played from a stereo).
Except that the FF source code is older than that, and had to run on W98 for quite a while, and going into source code and removing obsolete code is pretty low on most programmers' priority lists.

For a guy with such a low UID, you sure know crap little about CPU cache and.
I wish someone would come up with a driver that would allow A-series APUs to run Linux reliably without graphical issues.
Which is why my next CPU will be Intel, since I don't want to pay for something I won't use.. Not that I'll need one for quite a while. 4 CPUs and 8GB RAM is just... enough.
And to think that I was happy with a KayPro IV, Borland Pascal, Wordstar, an Anchor Signalman modem and a Star Gemini 10X printer...
"Stability and transparency are important", then radeonhd drivers are awesome.
Maybe I don't push the envelope, but the nvidia blob has been stable for me for ages.
Regarding transparency, sure I want it, but I accept that ideological purity is impossible to achieve, so I take 3/4 of a loaf and have great performance.
That probably puts me on the FSF enemies list, but I don't care.
A usage tax (based on mileage and weight per wheel) would be the most fair.
But people would understate their mileage wildly as people overstated their dependents on their taxes. Thus, just as newborns must now get SS cards, cars would need to get some black box and then Slashdotters and Glen Beck would scream "Big Brother".
Someone has been reading too much Science Fiction and not enough History.
What other country besides the PRC could successfully implement a one-child policy? (Even then, it's fertility rate is 1.7.)
Huge-scale genocide or pandemic are the only solutions to getting the population down to a more manageable 4Bn.

because it's patently bullshit?
Which is why I do not believe it. But *lots* of people do, and they hold the reins of power; thus, we can't just dismiss them as unimportant.
Evolution and AGC.

I have tremendous respect for the US Military
Support the troops: bring them home?
I have a lot less respect for the rich and powerful who get their politician underlings to order the invasion of a country so they can secure oil and make big profits
Shades of Smedley Butler...
Don't believe AC that the US installed the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party into power.
And the "home of the free" legalized slavery for 89 years and now wants to tell people how much Coke they can drink in one serving.

Multiple copies. One on your person and one with your luggage at the hotel/hostel.
Denying them their privacy
As if ear buds are the only way for children to have their privacy.
"Within reason" means "restrict(ing) how loud they can have their music".
No, I'd have told them to stop being rude to the rest of the family.
Playing music your parents hate is also antisocial
While I can't stand my daughter's pop music, my kids haven't yet reached the stage of purposeful antagonism yet.
Also, they know to keep the volume down when I'm in my office.
Besides the standard parental "You'll hurt your ears!", the main reason is that it's been obvious to me since they became popular that constant ear bud usage is antisocial, and as long as I have control over my kids, I'll do everything I can to prevent it (even if that means listening to music I can't stand being played from a stereo).
the govt. job is the one where my coworkers' and my motivations have been the least self-serving.
Then why did the Soviet Union collapse?

OS crashes should be very uncommon and thus you shouldn't design your software around them.
By far, the predominate OS that FF runs on is Windows. Thus, the developers are concerned about frequent OS crashes.

That seems too high-level.
